Well... it's 9am Wednesday morning. It's the week the Meltdown Drags are typically held... By this time we would have 2 hrs on the road and looking to meet up with our Canadian friends in Grand Forks so we can caravan South to the event... Feels odd that I'm sitting here making HAMB comments and not hauling ass to the event... Very odd.

We will not be at Glory Days... We would love to be there for the first event but life got in the way... We'll see you all at the Fall Fall Out in September.

Good luck... Be safe... Play well with the other kids

  3. I guess I can put the jug of nitro I was going to bring you back in the shop. The triple dog dare still stands. We will have to do our international beer swap this fall. I hope you are better by then. I will get some pics of the event.

Interlake Dragway - Nostalgia Show August long Weekend 2019 - Done and Fun !!

This is the 2nd year the manitoba gasser Association (Man Gas) has been asked to put on a show for the uninitiated. While we didn;t get a lot of cars running down the track and even fewer in the "prefered parking for hot rods" - this year's event was a huge success...

The highlight of the event was Robert Nieves from Wisconsin making the 13 hr trip north to come play with us... He had a blast and we felt privileged to have him there

    Roll Call:
Dave Pelissier (me) - 63 Scout FX
Scott Brown / Paul Pelissier - Prefect Storm 49 Prefect
    Larry Arnold - Sheet & Giggles 23 T Altered
Robert Nieves - Home Built Front engine dragster - 392 hemi
    Dave Williamson - 63 Olds Starfire - 506 Olds & 4000 lbs = 9.90s !!
    Dan Jefkins - 63 Pontiac Tempest - 389 tri power / 4 speed
Vince Link - 62 Savoy - 440 - Old Bison Dragway Super Stocker
    Ryan Tront - 63 Falcon Gasser - 429

With the exception of Larry succumbing to an ignition problem and Vince having to swap out a header gasket... the event went incident free for us and we were extremely well received. So much so that the track wants us back for next year

Maybe some of you south of the border folks will pony up for a passport and come have some fun (August 1,2,3 2020)

The Scout ran great... We set a new person best of 9.69 / 139 as well as some really good wheels up launches. We paired the plow truck with Dave Williamson's 9 sec battle cruiser and the crowd loved it.

The super stockers (Savoy and Lemans) were also a hit and The Prefect Storm and Mr. Nieves also had a few fender to fender battles.

Don Sedo had the original Fanagler Cougar Funny Car on display... Complete with the first fiberglass 67 Cougar body, square tube frame and nitro burning injected 289. This is a work in progress but it would be very cool to hear this thing cackle

My favorite moment was when 84 yo John Dixon rolled his 48 Anglia into the staging beams... This was an original C/Gas car from the Bison Dragway days that has been converted to a 340 Mopar / 4 speed street rod... John has never been down a drag strip before and he had a blast running the Anglia. he'll be framing the time slip.

So... next year... Some of you folks need to make the trip !!
I'll be talking to some of you at Fall Out in September..

The Canadian invasion will be at the Fall Fall Out 4 Sept 20 & 21

We will be bringing 5 cars this year
    > My Scout
    > The Prefect
    > Larry's 23 T
    > Ryan Tront's 63 Falcon
    > Dave Williamson's 63 Olds Starfire

See previous post for pics of these machines

This will be Dave and Ryan's first time at this event. Ryan has been to Meltdown as a Spectator and has been building the Falcon just so he can run these events

Gary and Kim Misko are also coming but without their 39 Willys that has been to Fall Out and the Meltdown events in previous years. Gary found coolant in the bellhousing and hasn't had the time to look into the issue... I'm thinking Gary is coming because I might have mentioned something about letting him run the Scout

Also - Larry and Arlene's Sheets & Giggles 23T has been downgraded from the rowdy blown & injected small block on alcohol - to a much tamer gas burning, single carb 383 sbc... Larry has been chasing some issues with the blower motor with very little luck... A couple of weeks back he decided to make the swap to the "backup" motor and he put in a herculean effort to make it happen just so he can make the trip

We'll be pulling in Thursday night to drop trailers... See y'all then

Drag Racing 101 - Fall Fall Out 4 was Awesome !!
My wife Lori and I were there with the Scout, Larry and Arlene Arnold made the trip with the Sheets & Giggles altered after an epic 3 week thrash to change motors (Hurt the blower motor) and Fall Out rookies Dave Williamson (9 sec 62 Olds Starfire) and Ryan Tront (63 Falcon) also came down. The Misko clan Gary, Kim and Katie, made the trip without their 39 Willys street rod (Broken) but Gary did some driving duties in the Scout and Katie was doing back duties for her dad and I on the track. my brother and his wife Kim did not make the event with the "Prefect Storm" Prefect... They were missed

The trip down was relatively uneventful with 4 trucks and trailers in caravan... The only excitement was me losing trailer brakes while navigation through traffic and construction in Minneapolis... Yikes !!

The threatening weather was never a factor and the Rock Falls Raceway crew did a fantastic job keeping the track in great shape for the Friday / Saturday event...

Both Dave's heavyweight Olds and the Scout were limited to 10.00 or slower as we did not have NHRA chassis certs... so 1000 ft shut offs were the order of the weekend (at least for me)

The highlight of the weekend for me... and I'm sure the Misko's weekend, was Gary's 9 second run in the Scout. Gary did 3 passes prior to this run and had a best pass of 11.14... pretty good for a guy whose previous best was a 12.50... I really wanted Gary to have a 10 second pass so I asked him what it would take to go .15 faster... Gary simply said... "I've been shutting it off at 1000 ft like you said"... My response... "Well... Don't"

    Gary's 4th pass completely ignored the 10 second zone and blasted a wheel-standing 9.97 / 133...

I really wish I had been at the time slip shack when Gary saw that little piece of paper with that 9 second time on it... Katie and I were pretty sure we could here the hoot'n and holler'n as we walked back to the pits

It was fun switching off with Gary on Friday... The tower were a bit confused as to who was driving... It was "Dave" or the "Other Guy"...

Dave and Ryan were running laps all weekend. Dave ran a personal best 1/8th mile time on a shut off pass and then he dipped into the 9's one time too many and got "the talk" from the track. Dave's Oldsmobile was extremely popular, especially with his 506 Olds sounding like a high winding small block

Ryan got numerous requests for match ups from some very popular racers and I'm sure he got at least a dozen runs in over the 2 days. I can't wait for the warmed over 429 in the primer Falcon to be replaced by that rowdy 521" BBF for next year... (9's maybe ??)

After a 3 week epic thrash to put his daughters Super Comp motor in the altered, (the blown, injected sbc is hurt)... Larry ran bracket like 10 second passes on Friday... then things went sour on Saturday with a mystery problem that Larry never did find the cause... But not without a ton of effort by Larry to find it on Saturday

I made 5 passes in the Scout and they were great !! Since I was shutting it off early I tried to put on a show at the starting line. I made some really good burnouts and kept the wheelie bars low and less expensive, but still did some good (lower level) wheelstands anyway.

Sunday was pretty special as I got to match up with some great machines and good friends. Ron Green with his low 9 second Possum Chaser Crosley Wagon, Bill Killough and his 63 Lemans with blown Pontiac power (He went 9.49 this weekend !!) and then a great match with Robert Nieves to end my weekend. The Scout blew a header gasket out on that pass. A relatively easy fix but it was late in the afternoon and they were planning to stop for the burnout and wheelstand events. I decided instead to watch the show and relax.

Both Thursday and Friday night saw our group at "Randy's Family Restaurant" for great food, great conversation and some seriously good times. Saturday night we enjoyed the racer's BBQ and then socialized at the track with the likes of Jeremy and Carly Stuper, Mark Dietrich (Meltdown / Fall Out announcer), David Zie and a number of the MDA / Drag Racing 101 crew... Even spent some time at Robert Nieve's camp... Damn that was a fun evening...

    2 really fun moments:
On Gary's first pass with the Scout I prepared 2 signs that I held up to the windshield. The first simply said "Be Safe / Have Fun" generated a nod from Gary... The second said "Don't Shit the Fire Suit"... That got a laugh from a nervous driver... and then the starting line staff...

The second was when Brian Kohlman (31 Chrysler coupe on nitro) pulled up in his golf cart to say hello. As we talked and he sold t-shirts, they announced the Wheelstand Contest. I looked past Brian at his golf cart and said "You know... 3 fat guys hanging off the back... we could win"... 2 minutes later... Gary, Ryan, Brian, one of Brian's crew and myself are hanging off - and out - of the cart with helmets on and Canadian flags flying... Brian... being the quiet shy type... (not)... rolled this motley crew right through the staging lanes and right up to the starting line... It took a moment for the starting line crew to figure out why we there but once they did it took far less time to throw us out of the area... It didn't stop us from doing 3 really long bumper scrapers (literally) in the staging lanes... Much to the delight of the fans in the top rows.

In spite of the controversial decision to not let us compete... we're claiming 3rd place !!

Thank you to the MDA/Drag Racing 101 crew and the staff and crew at Rock Falls Raceway for a fantastic event and facility.

Also... thank you to the Sponsors... Suburban GM who gave away another engine, CTech Technologies who gave away 5 more shop carts, Scott's Rods who donated a 1/4 scale Anglia kart body (Gorgeous paint, stripe and lettering by Smokey Mo Peterson) as well as Competition Products, NFG and others

Also - thanks to Gasser Wars Magazine for being on site as well as all the other photographers and online magazines attendance.

Make plans to join us for Fall Fall Out 5 next year... it's worth the effort, even if you don't have a nostalgia car

(You'd have more fun if you did though)

    Done for the Year !!

Scout has been serviced, block drained and antifreeze added, fuel pump removed oiled and wrapped up, fuel lines cleaned oiled and wrapped... oil drained and an oil cleanser added so I can flush the last of the tainted oil in the spring. Pulled the battery, sprayed some fogging oil in the cylinders and backed off the valve springs . All that's left to do is put the Scout up on jack stands in the trailer...

It's been a short... but very good season

Early in the spring I got the dents banged out of the front end and repainted the front clip... The dents are gone but the paint doesn't match all that well... but it looks a lot better and I'm not going to sweat the color issue... At least I can look at pics of it from this year and not see the crunched front end.

My test n Tune in January went exceptionally well... The Scout ran great and we resolved a sticking throttle issue that has been plaguing the Scout for a couple of years. (Bad cable)

We missed the Glory Days ... Bummer

The Manitoba Gasser Association (Man Gas) put on another little nostalgia show at Interlake Dragway the first week of August. It was a huge hit !! The highlight was Robert Nieves coming up from Wisconsin to join the show. He fit right in (with a little help from the local lunatics)... Next year we might get a full day for our event mixed with the usual Test n Tune for the local racers. We are hoping to combine it with a Rod Run... Robert is already recruiting some locoals south of the border to make the trek (Get a Passport)

Anyone who wants to come North to play with us next year... please let me know...
The current target date is the first weekend in August 2020

The next racing event was the Fall Fall Out 4 - You can read about it above...

    Next Year / Off Season:

Not much planned for the Scout... maybe a general cleaning and a little detail work but performance wise it's just fine as is... There is a little birdy telling me to look for some Corvette side pipe headers and fabricate so I can fabricate some zoomies for the Scout... and increase the exhaust to 1 7/8" while I'm at it

The current event plan is the aforementioned Man Gas show in August as well as a return to the Fall Fall Out 5... There is some discussion about Glory Days as well as the "Out a Sight" event in June at Great Lakes Dragaway

Guess we'll see how the winter goes and where I'm at come spring

May I Present: Miss Katie Misko...
Katie, very capably, did back-up duties for both her father Gary Misko (in the Scout) and for me at the Fall Fall Out 4 event. Don't be surprised if she makes a pass or two in the Scout someday soon.

See the look in the 4th pic... That was her "Move your ass" look... also known as "Why aren't you going where I'm telling you"... look... I got that look more than once...

Manitoba Gassers Assoc (Man Gas) at Interlake Dragway (Gimli Manitoba Canada)
    August Long Weekend (Aug 1, 2, 3)

Assuming the track is open, travel restrictions are lifted and the Zombie Apocalypse has passed - of course

At this time we are still planning to put on a show at Interlake Dragway; August 1, 2, 3

This is the first call for racers to come play.
    • We are looking for late 60's / early 70's race cars that still are or still look - Period correct. No billet, no carbon fibre, no modern wheels etc etc... (We are not a strict as Meltdown or Fall Out so exceptions can been made)
    • Altereds, FE Dragsters, Funny Cars, Gasser style, FX, Altered Wheelbase, old school Modified Eliminator and even Stock and Super Stock, Drag Bikes, Jalopies and Hot Rods...
    • Anything with racing history or heritage is especially welcome.
    • New participants must be pre-approved (by us)
    • Static display cars will be welcomed (pre-approved)
    Format
    • Saturday will be a Test n Tune / Match Race - No formal structure
    • Sunday we will pair up similar cars or times and run as a group between the bracket classes - 3 Passes
    • Monday is optional
    The cost is... Nothing !!
The last few years the driver and one crew were allowed in for free. (We will confirm this)

    Leave a message here - or;
    • Call Dave Pelissier at 204-270-8103 - I'm also on Facebook
    • Paul Pelissier at Pro Gear (204-783-4327)
    Notes
    1. Cars making passes must meet safety standards for the speed and times they are running. Man Gas supports this requirement 100%... If your car is not certified to run 9's or ?? or does not meet safety requirements we can make arrangements for you to make 1/8th mile passes or you can simply keep the car within the times you are legal for.
    2. We will consider a rear engine dragster but it must meet the old school criteria
    3. Folks coming up from the states - it is highly recommended that you have a valid Passport
    4. Gimli Manitoba is a wonderful lake / resort community with good food and beaches. But hotels are scarce this weekend. Camping and RV parking is allowed and the nite life at the track is outstanding.

Interlake Dragway has announced they are opening July 10, 11. Not surprising they are being held to the restrictions of: No spectators, One driver, One crew per car. Regular bracket racing but no points chase.

The Manitoba borders remain closed to other Provinces (14 day self isolate if you cross) and he US / Manitoba border also remains closed. The Rioting and Looting in North Dakota and Minneapolis is not helping the issue

Not sure where that leaves me or the Man Gas event. I don't run brackets and I don't run for points. I get the most satisfaction showing off for spectators and socializing. The road trips I plan for every year are in the States. With the Borders closed we have already ruled out the Outta Site Drags and Glory Days. We are looking at whether or not we will get to Rock Falls in September... Still hoping we can. It's the only real reason other than the Man Gas event to put the Scout back together at the moment.

Not getting to Rock Falls will suck heavily. I miss my racing friends. And this is 99.9% likely to be my retirement year which would have happened a week prior to the event. It would awesome to celebrate my retirement with the folks at this event and the Drag Racing 101 crew

    Man Gas Event Aug 1, 2, 3:
The first priority for the Man Gas event was to help the track by bringing spectators through the gate. Something that we have been pretty good at the last 2 years. This was also why we were getting free admission at the gate from track management. Some of the Man Gas members are still wanting to gather and run the cars but I will have to talk to the track about the gate arrangements. I suspect we'll be asked to run test n tune on Saturday at $65 / car. I actually support that position as the track needs income. But unless things change, the gathering would be without the US and Saskatchewan folks who were planning to attend.

    Stay tuned

Rockers and valve lash reset, blown header gaskets replaced, fuel system re-installed
    All that's left is:
    • Reset the barrel valve and butterflies
    • Clean the injectors
    • Tighten bolts front to back
    • Test Fire
    Optional:
    • Back off the timing 4 degrees
    • Go 5% overdrive on the blower
This is so we can test July 11 at Interlake Dragway and get ready for the Man Gas gasser show August 1, 2

Hoping the Canada / US borders will be open by the August event but I am having my doubts. We had a few US racers coming up for the Man Gas event.
Then hoping the borders will be open for the Fall Fall Out event in Sept... also strong doubts... I'll miss my US friends

Could be 2 local events and done for us this year

I was only thinking yesterday about the Scout and where it was. Glad to see you're into it again. As an aside, did anything ever show up regarding 'Dragnasty' that got stolen?

    Well... Shit !!
    Not racing today...

Fired up the Scout Thursday... fired immediately and settled into an idle. (perfect)... except for the fuel leak at the shut off valve... No problem, I have a rebuild kit

Rebuild the Shut off valve... it's a little still now but it opens and closes... Re-install
Now the Scout fires on the prime - but won't stay running... WTF ??

    And so it begins...
My friend Larry come over and we dive into the issue... 3.5 hrs. Everytime we take it apart we have to drain the fuel system, remove the idler pulley and then scrape our knuckles on the rad... Other difficulties include a blower belt in the way. I have a crank support which means I cannot remove the belt without removing the front of the support.

In hindsight... We should have removed the rad and the blower belt / crank support right at the beginning... but we got caught up in the black hole that is the "quick fix - save the effort". Larry and I have scraped and bleeding knuckles from the rad as a reminder

So here is how I spent my beautiful Friday afternoon:
Only the highlights are listed here... This process was not nearly as efficient as this list might imply
    • Confirm fuel in the tank - Check
    • Confirm fuel getting to the pump - Check
    • Confirm fuel is passing through the pump - Check - Fuel dribbling through the assembly when outlet line lowered below tank
    • Spin the engine over... barely get a burble of fuel from the pump (Crap !!)
    • Take it apart...
    • Decide this is the time to install my backup shut off valve - Not happy as it's only a -6 outlet w a -8 adapter.
    • Before we replace it - Larry picks up the "rebuilt" shut off and it's working perfect - It's a miracle (WTF #2)
    • Spin test the pump with a drill - It works great... moves fuel like a champ
    • Turn the engine over and confirm the pump drive is turning - It is
    • Hex shaft on the pump drive barely engages the pump drive (was it engaging at all ??) Add a spacer behind the shaft - engagement is much better... Of course we killed ourselves taking the pump extension off when we really didn't need to... But no regrets
    • Reassemble
    • Spin the engine over... barely get a burble from the pump (Crap !!)
    • And the shut off is back to being too stiff (WTF #3)
    • We discover that the shut off works well without the hardline pump loop attached. Then binds when it's added. Guessing the hardline was distorting the shut off body
    • Try firing the engine to see if the higher rpm will prime the pump or make a difference - Nope !
    • Take it apart
    • Change fuel pumps
    • Replace the hardline pump loop with a flexible line - Shut off works well
    • Reassemble
    • Pump loop line - when attached - prevents us from tightening the Idler pulley (Crap !!) I'll sort that out later
    • Reconfirm fuel is getting to the pump and dribbling through the pump
    • Spin the engine over... barely get a burble from the pump (Crap !!)
Throw up our hands in defeat (for now).

So as it stand the only thing we can think of as the problem is the cam spud has broken. The shaft was spinning from friction but when there's a load on it it's not working. Before we peel the whole front of the motor off I'm going to pull the rad and the pump and try to turn the pump drive with an allen key and see what it feels like.

If it's broken - Then we've identified the problem
If it's not broken - Then we still have no clue what's wrong

I will be talking to a gentleman named Jeff Wiebe this weekend at the races. The same ones I will now be watching instead of racing at... Jeff has worked on the scout in the past and he's very good with mechanical injection... I am sure he will sort it out before the Aug Long weekend MAN GAS event... Not having the Sxcout there would be a bad thing.... But getting the Scout to him and retrieving it is a hassle (2 hrs round trip)

Why do we do this again ??

  22. Sir I have been avoiding my old cars the last 7 years from some personal crap. I just logged in to hamb, read 28 pages about your scout, and can feel the itch again! Looks like you’re having fun, even when you aren’t. Keep it up!

Thanks Ryan... It's been quite a ride. Wouldn't trade it for the world

  25. I agree. My Deuce coupe has been a nice sized bucket of issues too. It sure helps to forget about our other problems though!

    Fixed... !!
Barrel valve in the shut off assembly wasn't clocked correctly. My bad... Now I know. Showed a straight through pass from end to end when opened but wasn't opening the top outlet. Figured it out doing blow testing with the primary unit and my backup unit that I wanted to install yesterday, first thing to see if it made a difference... But I didn't. Would have targeted the problem in 5 minutes... (Hindsight... sucks)

My neighbor said when I was doing the "blow" tests I looked like that little Pan guy from those horrible Hercules cartoons... He brought me beer... I'll forgive him

Once I got it sorted out the Scout fired immediately and ran like a champ. But too late to make it out ot the track

Nothing like 3 days, 6 hours and a bunch of adult language to learn something new

    We'll be testing July 25th

    July 25 Testing - All Good !! - For 2 of us

Oh my God it was hot at the track. Hotter than what I remembered at the Meltdown in 2016 and 17. It was 33 Celsius and a humidity that made it feel like 44 (111.2 F). The air density put the track at 4800 ft.

The Scout performed well... literally idled it off the line on the first pass and eased into it. It went 10.00 / 133. Should have put the Scout in the trailer and come home... but I was waiting for my brother to show up with the Prefect and Ryan Tront was shaking down the Ugly Duckling Falcon and his new 521 BBF combination.

I had a minor fuel leak after the first pass that was quickly repaired using the "just in case" horde of parts I carry.

Ryan's Falcon went 10.69 and 10.64 in the heat

The Prefect was a mess. It was hard starting and farting. When we put a load on it, it coughed and sputtered. I'm guessing a lack of proper maintenance has clogged the injectors.

Last pass with the Scout saw a greasy track / tire spinning 10.10 / 134 with a 1.67 - 60ft. Still happy with it.

Ready for the Manitoba Gasser Association - Nostalgia Show this coming weekend.

Man Gas Show Aug 2 - Was a HUGE Success... Wow !!
Where do I start on this... (Long read)
Interlake Dragway and Staff were the Perfect Hosts !!
The track was well prepared and run very well. The staff were professional and patient and the young ladies at the front gate put up with me/us with incredible patience and understanding. Even the "other" racers tolerated us. Personally I think they appreciated the extra time between rounds and probably wished they were running with our group.

Even with the borders closed and a few of our US friends unable to join us, we had 21 race + 3 display cars confirmed the Wednesday prior. We lost 2 before the event, lost 2 at the event and then picked up 4 - at the event and 1 display decided to make passes. That put 22 cars in the staging lanes for some fun match racing !! (So Happy !!)

The spectators were awesome. I'm pretty sure the track maxed out on the 500 COVID limit and we had a lot of folks showing their appreciation for the racers and race cars of all kinds. We got great feedback from the track and everyone in attendance.

Boy did this line-up put on a show !!
It was a great mix of Super Stock, Street Cars, Hot Rods, Gassers and seriously loud and fast machines. The only obvious gaps were the need for even one more altered to line up with the Sheets & Giggles machine and there were no front engine dragsters. Every participant ran hard and wanted to put on a show for the fans.

The format for us was to run as a group between the rounds of the Sunday Bracket classes. We did 3 formal passes with pairings and a formal line up. Prior to that, anyone in attendance for the Saturday test n tune could run and few of our group ran the Memorial gambler's race. Sunday prior to elimination we were allowed test runs which most of group took advantage of.

The Scout was angry !! - Good burnouts well past the line. Wheels up launches, double wheel-stands as I put the spurs to it. And a best of 9.72/135

The best part of it all was talking with the first time Man Gas participants. They all had a blast and they all had the "look" I've seen often from the Meltdown and Fall Out events... Every rookie said the same thing... I'm coming back" and they all told me about the changes they were going to make to make their cars more period correct, or faster, or safer...

They have definitely been bitten by the "Bug"

    Some Highlights
    Personal Best Times:
by Dan Jefkins, Ryan Tront, Jeff Edwards, Chad Berg and Ray Dueck

First 1/4 mile Times Ever: Peter Cole, Peter Bruel, Steven Yellowega and Brayden Harder

Biggest Thrash(es): Larry Arnold and Chad Berg. - Larry worked long hours for 2 weeks to get the Sheets & Giggles altered back together but his efforts were met with disappointing results at the track... But he was there. Even as a display, the car was deeply appreciated and drew a crowd during warm up...

Chad brought out his stupid cool 62 Biscayne with a new blower motor that was showing oil pressure problems all day Saturday and he looked like a Sunday scratch. But after a gazillion litres of expensive racing oil and an epic thrash he got it sorted out well enough to make runs on Sunday...What a great show he (and Henry Hiebert) put on

    Best Match Race
: Darlene Dujardin Dan Henry - Rene "Milner" Dujardin vs. Dan "Falfa" Henry was a great match up and made for a great lead in to the event. Folks thought the yellow coupe vs black 55 American Graffiti tribute was awesome and the announcer, Dave Meier played it up perfectly complete with period correct music.

Of course the 55 saw the taillights of the fastest thing in the valley... as expected. Need to step it for next year Mr. Henry

Most Rust Dropped on Track: JC Peters hands down... The "Patina" 55 Buick (BBC 12.0's) was stupid cool and he ran laps all weekend. Never would I have guessed I would see a starting line crew sweep rusted chunks off a track - with a grin on their faces (The Buick is for sale by the way)

Most Passes: Ray Dueck, - 70 yo Ray was making test passes both days and went to the finals of the Memorial Gambler's race with his period correct looking 61 Fairlane (11.30s / 500 inch BBF) Then he ran the brackets the next day as well as the Man Gas event

Honorable mentions: going to Dave Williamson (62 Starfire) JC Peters (55 Buick gasser) and Kevin Lundy (62 Chevy wagon). These guys looked like they were running circle track with all the laps they wracked up

Beauty and the Beast Award: Gary Misko and Larry/ Delores Clavelle - Gary brought his immaculate 12 second 39 Willys sedan and we paired him up with Delores and Larry Clavelle's 33 Essex Rat Rod.

The Essex was also a candidate for "Most likely to drop parts on the track"... but the BBC powered steam-punk style Rat Rod held it all held together for his 11.30 passes

Best Trailer: Without a doubt... JC Peters and his converted 70's tag along RV converted to a car hauler.
(Buy the Buick - get the trailer... Just saying)

Best Racer in a Supporting Role: Henry Hiebert. - Henry brought his immaculate (and fast) 62 Chevy II to match race his friend Chad Berg who of course... got all the attention. Thanks Henry, super glad you came and glad to have met you

Hard Luck: (I hate this award) Scott Brown/Paul Pelissier, Arlen/Larry Arnold, Dean Smith - Scott/Paul came up short with injection and flex plate issues in the Prefect Storm altered (Sucks), Dean Smith in Glen Novakowski's Nova. The thinly disguised A/MP machine packing 598 cu inches (9.50's) was on it's shakedown passes with the ever capable Dean Smith driving. It was prone to wheel-stands to say the least. The last bumper scraper, lifted all 4 wheels off the track and ended with frame damage upon re-entry and Dean took and hard head bump... Never good to see a car damaged... But more important - Glad you're ok Dean. Arlene and Larry's thrash is described above

Best Burnouts: Chad Berg and Henry Hiebert - Side by side long, loud and fogged in the starting line

Honorable mention: Peter Cole 64 Pontiac - Peter had the tires hazing almost to the 1/8 mile with his 421 Chevy powered Pontiac large body... Maybe we won't mention he smoked them this far on his 1st actual pass and he should have let off... We'll forgive him this time...

Car Most likely to Generate a Noise Complain: Chad Berg's 62 Biscayne (Supercharged BBC through zoomies)... This thing could end a conversation a mile away. It certainly stopped the Man Gas driver's meeting Chad was supposed to be attending

Honorable mentions and sincere appreciation to:
Heather and Katie Misko for doing the BUG duties for the group. Period correct Hip Hop outfits and competent back up skills.

Ralph Thomas (30 Ford coupe). At the first Man Gas event 2 years ago Ralph ran laps on the Saturday prior and was seen giving rides in the rumble seat. Should have done the same this year Ralph... Oh by the way... Heather looked great in your car. Should have let her make some passes

Skip Zetner who also did double duty bracket bashing and nostalgia racing with his big body (9.80) Mopar. Nice recovery with the fuel pump fix... Skip ran with us at the first event 2 years back... He's family now

Vic and Kevin Lundy who made effortless 10 - teen passes with their 62 Chevy wagon.

    Next Year:
This event started with 7 cars which grew to 9 last year and this year we had 22 making passes... I have 61 names on the list - right now - for next year !! Either as "Coming for sure" or "Keep me advised" or "Coming when the borders open"

Maybe next year we change from a filler between rounds to a Meltdown / Fall Fall Out style program where we share the track with the Test n Tune and Memorial Gambler's Race all day Saturday. Unlimited passes... Have fun. Maybe a Rod Run or destination drive.

Maybe a Gasser bracket shootout for a big trophy and a pound of Jelly Beans

    Stay Tuned

Man Gas Show 2020 - Some Comments

This is our third year for the group. It was a real challenge to even get 7 cars that first year and then we only managed 9 the next... But we put on a really good show and the fans came out to see us

This year we had 22 racers and 2 display cars... That number made me extremely happy.

This year, Inter-lake Dragway faced 2 major challenges. COVID and the fact a new 1/8 mile track opened up this same weekend. The new track is 45 minutes closer to Winnipeg than Gimli / Inter-lake and they booked in an impressive group of local high Hp / entertaining machines including an Injected Nitro car.

Inter-lake Dragway normally books in a Jet Car, Wheel-stander, Wild Bunch or Funny Car group for this long weekend event. But because of the COVID restricted spectator limits booking in a $5,000+ show made no business sense, so the track decided to bank on our little show and the regularly scheduled bracket classes to bring in the people.

On our "show" day (Sunday) the track easily hit the COVID max capacity of 500. Many of the fans said the only reason they were there was to see the nostalgia cars... Which made us feel very good.

In keeping with the Meltdown / Fall Out Tradition... We accepted no money to do this but the track agreed to allow the driver and 1 crew in for free. We paid out nothing to the nostalgia racers and we had no eliminations. There was not a single complaint from anyone who was part of the group or from any of the bracket racers.

At this time I have 60+ cars listed for next year. That may not sound like many cars but you have to understand where we are... (Google Winnipeg and Gimli) and you'll understand how limited our car base is and how far folks are willing to travel. And for now, it's a one man show putting this together... (Me)

Of course the 60+ number will rise and fall as we get closer to next year but the racer response to this year's event and the plans for next year has been overwhelming. As a result we will likely change the format to a Meltdown / Fall Fall Out style where we share the track with the Test n Tune folks on Saturday

So far I have approached 30+ racers on this idea and every single one of them not only agreed to be part of it - but have agreed to pay to be there (I'm proposing $35 rather than the regular $65)

And as with the Meltdown / Fall Fall Out... many refuse to believe that a group of racers will gather to celebrate an era, run their cars hard, with no eliminations, no prize money, no appearance or tow money - and - are willing to pay for the privilege... to support their track and their sport

Man Gas Drags 2021 ... Stay tuned folks... This little fuse has been lit

  30. How far away is it from rock falls dragstrip? What is the date for2021?
