Projects Joe's American Graffiti Coupe with a Man A Fre (Milner Coupe Clone)

  1. This is a tremendous amount of work for me. I'm so thankful that I have help. Hopefully this will give us an engine that is finally "healthy and happy". I sure didn't have either before!

  2. Moving forward! The valves were loose in the cast iron guides. The machine shop said that was definitely a problem. They may be able to save the valves but my new Comp Cam (260H) required different springs. 3. What do y'all think of the (260H) by Comp Cams?
I'm looking for better low end manners. Hopefully it will still sound good. Today we began preparing for the cam swap. Here's a not so pretty face. I love the original 1932 radiator though. Nice chop and metal work on the 1935 filler neck.

When we finally get back to tuning....I now have a cabinet full of parts!

Did Chevy use composite head gaskets from the factory ? I thought that the stock GM head gaskets were all steel shim ?

This is what I'm thinking , I've pulled a lot on SBC heads looking for decent ones & I don't recall seeing composition gaskts very often , when I did we usually passed on the heads knowing there been serviced previously ....

That would be great with the head gasket compressed.

Nick, are they going to have to cut the heads, or are they flat? Don't forget the problem you had with the intake sealing before you had the intake cut. Be sure to have a look when you get the heads back on. D

  16. I do remember that issue! They had to mill the heads. I think it was very minimal, like 6 thousandths or less. The machinist said that it shouldn't matter too much with gasket choice here. He did say that they definitely needed it.

  17. Today Rob and I attempted to change out the cam. After a bit of removal we found that we will need to also remove the front motor mount for access.

We needed to figure out a different way to support the motor for the change while also leaving the oil pan bolts accessable. I'll show our solution in a couple days.

We also decided to order another water pump. The $40 to replace it now was a great buy to hopefully prevent replacing it in the near future. IMG_20200708_100911.jpeg

  18. Today we removed the oil pan and cleaned things up for reinstallation. Bottom end looks good. No metal and light sludge in oil pan. More exciting work ahead....

Nic, not to be a smart-ass here, but wouldn't it be easier to take the 6 or 7 bolts out of the belhousing and yank the engine? Do all the work on an engine stand and make it easy on your back. You've already got everything out of the way. You may even uncover something else with the engine out... Just thinking out loud...

  20. I agree. We were thinking that today. Initially we didn't think it would require so much to be removed. Unfortunately I do not own an engine hoist or stand. Also, it's in a small garage. Maybe?

Unless you know the supplyer I distrust stainless valves some of the Chinese ones are junk. I won't buy Chinese heads complete

  24. Thank you so much for the offer! Let me talk with Rob and see where he wants to go. Since he's helping me with the cam change, I'll defer to his judgment.

  25. We tried it Rob's way first. Sketchy jack stands with wood spacers worked great. Timing cover and chain removed. IMG_20200715_112828.jpeg IMG_20200715_112325.jpeg IMG_20200715_112041.jpeg

  26. Good news! Cam and lifters look great.....NOT!

Two opposite side cam lobes and corresponding lifters were absolutely gone. Looks like this may have been our tuning problem all along.

    Oh well,
    Glad Dan wanted a different cam. Getting it done! IMG_20200715_122055.jpeg IMG_20200715_122036.jpeg IMG_20200715_122022.jpeg IMG_20200715_124000.jpeg IMG_20200715_124007.jpeg

Looks like now would be a good time to take up that engine hoist and stand offer.

Now would be the perfect time to put a 30-30 cam in it... ;)
