History WHAT WOULD YOU BUY

Have thought about this little fantasy over the years. If you could go back to any period pre 1966 and had $10,000.00 , what car or cars would you buy to bring back with you. I can think of several but a building full of mint ,zero miles 40 ford coupes would not be bad. I think I could buy about 15 .

 

If I was going back in time with some dough, I would take 25k and come back with Duesenberg SSJ supercharged Roadster Speedster.

If your going to go fantasy.......
Go big.

Who wants a crappy Ford or Poser Cadillac when you can have a....
Duesy?.....A real car that all cars including hot rods tried to imitate.

 

When I was younger and someone would ask what would you do if you won the lottery? I would say 2 things. Buy Alcatraz island and turn it into a nudist party resort and the other was buy a fully restored Deusenberg and run it through a demo derby just to make people cringe.

Don't worry, I will do neither. I don't play the lottery.

I would buy a '36 or '37 Cord Sportsman and then every Nomad I could with the rest of the money.

I agree, with 10 grand pre 66 my first thought would be a Shelby cobra.

 

Knowing what I know now I would bank the 10K and wait for Microsoft.

If we are using 1965 money and prices, my wife and I would like a pair of 1965 Shelby Cobras with a 289 motor and wire wheels, please. We could get 2 based on a $5000 list price, back then. A real his and hers item for us, 20 somethings to cruise around. Why two? Why not? 10000 in 1965 is equivalent to $85k in today’s valuation. So, would we spend $85 k today? Maybe for a nice sailboat, but not for two cars. We have our forever cars that are paid off, run great and have caused us no worries for 6 and 15 years, (hers and mine.)

But, to think of us being 20 somethings again is worth it. Yes, we probably would not have made it to this day, but as 20 somethings in 1965, a Shelby Cobra cruising up Highway One in the Big Sur Area and all the way up to the Oregon border? What is better than being with your life long partner, enjoying what we both like doing in a nice hot rod version of a British sports car?

We have done that route, but in a different sporty type car. It is/was pretty spectacular. This exercise allows us to look back and see how different it would have been in a 1965 289 powered Shelby Cobra with wire wheels. The 427 version would not have made it out of L.A. without stopping for gas 10 times. (and hearing problems) Plus, that wasn't for another year or two.

The question is a little odd as the past is not like today. In this day and economy, $85k is a lot of money to spend on a pair of Cobras. But, today, those original 289 Cobras would be worth in the 1 million+ range, real one like the photo is a little out of reach for most normal people.

The street-legal version of the Ford GT... they built eight of them, and list price was $8K.

 

Forget the cars, I Should have bought MicroSoft when it was a penny stock, read in Forbes magazine years ago, 10K in penny stock worth 250 million by mid 90's. Woulda/Coulda/Shoulda.

 

One Shelby Cobra and one 427 SOHC Galaxy. With the left over cash all of the Shine I could and let it age. 20+ year old shine is smoooooooooth and oh sooooooooooo goooooooooood.

 

But it seemed like 10K in '66 would get you more than 79K does today.

 

A 54 Buick Skylark and with left over money a few tri 5 Chevy convertibles.

 

I would buy a waterfront lot , sell it today and buy all the cars above

 

1956 Packard Carribean & any Hemi Mopar .

 

At between $619 to around $750, I'd buy as many 1937 Chevy coupes and convertibles as the $10k would allow! Since I think they're the nicest of the 1930's Chevy cars, I'd be sitting on a gold cache today!
I might buy one 1939 Chevy opera coupe, since I have one currently, and it would be fun to have a brand new one!

 

I had a 1966 GTO back then, so I would try to swing a deal on a 427 Cobra and a new red GTO like I once owned.

 

40-41 Willys coupe and back in time date around 1949 to get’used’ car prices!
1940 Ford coupe next; 1938 Plymouth coupe .

Speaking of Cobras... the septic service guy was over pumping my tank the other day, saw my old Vette. Says a guy in our town, some years ago, had a super rare Cobra, one of 5 iirc, a 289. He needed money and sold it to another local guy for $350K. That guy flipped it for $1M. If true, is there 5 super special Cobras?

 

One 1956 Crown Vic and about 5 427 Ford Cammers.

 

There may be other cars that have appreciated more, but my first thought is a Shelby Daytona coupe since they're worth in the $7 million range today.

 

All this talk about Cobras in the 60's, a friend of mine bought this one used for $3950. in the 60's. The good part is, he is still driving it, original paint and all !

 

If I had $10,000 in 1966 I'd have bought a house.
