I posted this question earlier I thought but guess I didn't hit create thread, anyway , I assume the clutch on a 39 ford pickup with 221 ,85 hp engine and 3 speed top loader has a 9 " clutch and pressure plate. If anyone knows for sure , please let me know, fixing to order parts to rebuild or semi rebuild trans and want to add new clutch and lp and throw out bearing . Thanks
It should have a 9 inch clutch as long as it’s the original set up. But these cars and trucks have been around a long time. Who knows what’s been swapped into over the years. If possible I try to pull the trans out first to make sure. If the motor was swapped out at some point for a later flathead it could have a 10 inch clutch and flywheel set up in it. You just don’t know till you put your hands on it.
Thanks, for reply, you are right I might as well wait , just thought I would get every thing ahead of time but no a big deal.
We stock and sell clutches for the flathead Fords. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had customers call and need to return the new clutch they just bought because the one in their vehicle was a different size. We’ve learned to ask them to check the diameter before placing the order. In most cases, just measuring the spacing of the pressure plate bolt holes will confirm the size. Previous owners or builders of these cars were known to swap engines and transmissions out, so check the size in advance....it can save you dollars in extra shipping costs.
THANKS , Was wondering if I could measure the bolt distance , but since trans I coming out I will just wait.
