I just got my car running and as soon as I put the foot down it starts to bellow blue smoke, but still ran ok. I assumed it was a ring, but the #7 intake rocker had came off. Would this cause the excess smoke?

    Thanks,
    Alex Gillman

Isn't blue smoke oil consumption being burned off...meaning weak rings?? I am surprised it ran smoothly with an intake valve closed. What kind of engine?? V8 or straight flathead 8??

    It's a 79 Chevy 350
I was surprised too. I will probably pull it and make sure

  4. I smoked a pack a day for over 45 years and quit four years ago. Oh engine smoke. If it is a shevrolit it is supposed to smoke.

Intake rocker coming off could cause it to draw oil up past the rings.

is this engine in your avatar Pontiac? just curious. yes, an intake rocker being off will and can make your car smoke. imagine all the vacuum created by the piston going down the cylinder without the intake valve open it is trying to draw from wherever it can like past the rings into the crankcase. make sense? put a rocker arm on it and see. good luck

Is it a fresh engine? or a used one?

Are they on the same shelf as the glider engines?

If it is a fresh built or rering job the person who assembled it may have dipped the piston in oil to oil up the rings like I have done for the past 57 years, it gets a bit smokey at first but it burns off pretty quick.
If it is an unknown quantity engine that you just picked up it could indeed be worn out to the point it is going to burn a lot of oil. Or the valve seals may be shot if the smoke clears up after a few minutes.

One shelf over from the VW Beetle water pumps...:p

Intake rocker off so intake valve not opening is going to cause it to draw a hell of a lot of oil up past the rings during the intake stroke
