The photo of the coupe is mine, one I was about to delete. Instead,
I asked for help on the "Photoshop" thread and fellow HAMBer Dave
Tartaglia (Rot 'N Kustom) sent me his vision. Both the color of the
car and background were entirely different. Thanks to Dave.

Also, to give credit where credit is due, Moose and Madfish
each sent a version of the shot. All three versions are savers.

    Hello,

What is more patriotic than red, white and blue? In our old cruising grounds of Bixby Knolls, we had access to sections of a Northeast industrial area that housed a hot rod guy/girl’s every wish. This Cherry Avenue location had hot rod history along with being a block or two from the famed “Cherry Avenue Drags” location, South. But, one shop was always busy with a ton of projects going on the site.

Jocko’s Porting Service. It was the “go to” place for all hot rod/drag race people to get work done on their heads. (in more ways than one…) It was the premier place for porting and polishing, modifying and reconstructing speed parts for all purposes. The most famous early drag racers all had their heads ported and polished, along with other services.

We were lucky to have lived in Long Beach, with its rich history in the hot rod and drag racing world. Some local little guys made a name for themselves through their outstanding designs and services. Our high school cruising grounds included Northeast Long Beach, which had a string of hot rod shops and places for getting things nobody else could do in the automotive services. In the area on Cherry Avenue that ran North from Del Amo Boulevard to South Street, had the most popular hot rod, custom car, drag racing vehicles and had places for any old car in need of special services.

They ranged from wheel balancing and alignment shops, welding shops, tires and custom rims stores, muffler shops, chrome accessories shop, several hot rod building garages, Stu's Transmission shop, and of course, Jocko’s Porting Service, as well as the famous Henry’s Machine Works. This area fed the needs of several local cities, Lakewood to the East, Long Beach to the South/West and Paramount/Bellflower to the North. Sure, there were speed shops and similar services on the Westside of Long Beach, but not within the same almost 2 mile long, Cherry Avenue location. It definitely was a one stop shopping experience.

For us, we utilized Henry’s Machine Works for new axles, wheel/axle bolt patterns, frame supports, and other metal works for our cars. The tire/custom wheel shop did a great business with custom rims and various tires/slicks. The welding shop made custom headers as well as those long lakes pipes, and even those scavenger pipes for the locals. Transmission problems, stick or automatic? Stu's was the place.

But, on the word of advice from Reath Automotive, we had to get our new build, 292 C.I. Chevy heads ported and polished at Jocko’s. Almost every hot rod/drag racer in the area had some work done at Jocko’s. It definitely made a change in how fast the motor became, after one of the famous smooth surface porting/polishing jobs. Jocko’s was the place to go for this service.

"Jocko was a genius who applied his knowledge of airflow and his craftsmanship to the construction of this streamlined, full-bodied dragster--the first one that really worked, and the last true streamliner to set a world E.T. record. Painted white with red scallops, with an eight-carb, 6-71-blown, 450-inch Herbert-cammed Chrysler and Jazzy Nelson driving, it turned a then-amazing 8.35 at Riverside and was featured on the Nov. '59 Car Craft cover."

“Porting is the process of grinding small holes in a car’s cylinder heads to increase horsepower.”
