Repairing 1932 Ford Wheelwells

I have an opportunity to purchase a tudor sedan with a decent body and bad rear wheel wells. I was wondering if anyone has tackled the replacement panel where the lip of the bead is rusted away and very thin. I don't know how I would go about it. I am sure it can be done but seeking someone with experience in the task. You can see in the photo the problem. Would you need to make a new bead? I would appreciate any ideas.

 

You might want to try Snyders Antique auto parts in Ohio. Not sure that anyone is making the deuce bead yet, but I used a Model A sedan reveal on the 32 Ute I built for around the rear fender. I think they may have the inner panel as well.

 

Contact Chris at Salt Flat Speed Shop, he can whip you up a new set with the correct bead and all. I think he's reasonable and I plan on having him make me some door skins this winter.

 

SAR makes this repair panel for the Model 40s - not sure if the bead is close enough to match a 32 though . . .

Lynn, there are no commercial stampings to replicate the sedan wheel wells or beads, with your California address I don't think it would be difficult to find someone in the LA area, like Bobby Walden's shop that could hand fabricate them.

 

i used some pieces cut from an old model a rear fender to repair that on mine but there was enough bead to weld to....

I's suggest you invest in a bead/swage machine and take the time to learn how to use it, or find someone who has. Small, little patches of metal welded and filled over won't get you where you want to be on that panel!

Thanks Dick, I know Bobby could make them and they would be perfect. I will check with him next week at the show. Are you coming this year?

 

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but does the whole bead need replaced? If you could leave just the very edge of the upper bead. I think you could make the bottom half with just a stretcher. I did something similar when making a bead on my 34 pickup's back panel to go around the driveshaft loop. I had to make both the upper and lower,but it was on a much smaller scale.

The bead is bad and thin so it would be difficult to weld. Cutting in the middle would not solve the problem. I need to have a pro shop make the panels and weld them in. The cost of the job (2 wheel wells and installation) would be as much as the car cost. I passed on the car but thanks for the tips.

 

When reradiusing the rear wheel wells on my 34' tudor I made that reveal out of 1" by 1/4" strap. I cut the wheel well portion bead & all off of the car and raised it 3". This let me channel the car more while retaining the tire in the wheel well. The problem was that I had a 3 1/2" void in the wheel well bead. I took a 1/4" by 1" stap and curved it to match the contour and radiused the edges to match. I'm sure that the same could be applied here. It's not rocket science just hot rodding.

I used the same method making the bead on the bottm of the back panel of this 34' truck.

 

After getting my '32 sedan body dipped the drivers side wheelwell was alot worst than it looked before dipping. I was able to save the outer half of the bead though and made the edge half from formed 3/4 x 3/4 18 gauge sheet metal and a shrinker/stretch. The reat of the wheelwell was made in pieces using my Harbor Freight English wheel and planishing hammer. It took a little time but wasn't that difficult. The attached pictures are the best I have at this time of the wheelwell. I originally bought coupe/roadster patch panels but desided to make them from scratch after seeing how different they were.

 

Thanks, it looks like the same problem I had. It came out nice. I have the same rear axle set up in my chassis. I am hoping to find a better body this weekend at the LARS.

 

I received some photos of the inside of the sedan. Here you can see how much is left of the wheel well (not much). I hope to find some more ideas on how to repair this at the LARS. Thanks to all who responded.

Reiters in Detroit can probably make them and send them to you. They have two door bodies there, and can approximate what you need

Still....I dont think anyone is for a '32 sedan. Amazingly enough.

 

Jump 10 year in the last four posts from 2010 to 2012 to 2018 to 2020 and no one has an answer ?!
I'm interested too who has the answer for this.

 

The answer is no one makes them, you have to fabricate your own or pay someone to make you a one off set.

This is what they're supposed to look like, you can see in the pictures they bow out from the frame and have a different shape than a coupe or a roadster..
