I got so good a fixing my junk it worked it’s way over to fixing other people’s junk. Now I got no time to work on my junk.

 

I once had a '29 Ford roadster with a loose steering column shaft bushing. I pulled the bushing, cleaned & repainted the steering column, installed a new bushing & installed it in the car. Steering column made the rest of the interior look like crap, so I statrted redoing some other things which led to spending about $15k, which I hadn't planned to do. Most expensive bushing ever........

 

Sounds like my house!

 

When you live in the rust belt doing any suspension work usually requires replacing all the components attached to it.

Go to Harbor freight, pick up a slide hammer, come back with hammer, 6 shop lights and some hooks for cords, this hobby isn’t cheap.

My new ‘51
It would barely crank cold, ran poorly and would not crank hot.

Got a 6v charger.

Cleaned all primary leads and grounds....
Cranks over like it’s supposed to.

Go through all the tune up stuff. New cap, new plugs, new wires and new points.
A great improvement.

I rebuild my 1950 94.
I put the overhauled 94 on the ‘51. The ‘50 carburetor uses ball linkage.

I have to make a new throttle rod out of a F1 rod. It had to be shortened, threaded with a die and bent to shape.
It runs very very well tuned up with a new carburetor but the accelerator linkage is not right.

I find the problem.......the hole for the accelerator rod in the patch panel is not in alignment, putting the rod in a bind.

Another problem is...,,the toe board has a patch panel!

Not just a patch panel but a patchwork quilt of patch panels. It’s not rust damage......A big engine was in it at one time.....

I go back to the Flathead.....,
It was missing the oil filter.
I decide to use the oil filter from my ‘50 engine.

To do this I have to take the factory exhaust off.
Since I have the exhaust off, I go back with a set of shoebox headers from my old ‘50.
Reinstalling the headers I discover that a PO used 4 wrong bolts installing the manifolds.
The front 4 manifold bolt holes had damaged threads I had to repair.

While underneath fighting those headers I discover why the brake lights do not work. The switch connections are worn and the lighting harness is naked plumb to the main harness.

Now the fuel pump bowl is filling up with rust.
It looks like I need new lines and a tank.

The brake lines and hoses look like hammered poo poo.

I need to find out why it feels like it’s braking on 2 wheels.

I’m afraid to look.

Other than that, it’s going pretty smooth.

To answer you question HRP in a word, yes. Always thought that's the way it supposed to be.

Mine is a old one that’s been stored and shuffled around for decades.

I’m really really having fun with it. I just have to make out a punch list. I had one (50 Coupe) when I was 22.

Having another old shoebox coupe, working underneath it...on it.....it’s kind of like being back at home.

Btw, I went to Napa and low and behold, they do not carry a axel seal for a big bearing Ford 9”. They had one in Reno......

 

The car is just letting you know its still working. Its just making suggestions for the next time you think you have nothing to do, or maybe for the next time you NEED something to do.

I've run nothing but copper silicone sealant between headers and head for 10+ years now, no leaks.

I spent the last year or so building a fresh 427 to replace the one I blew up about 4 years ago. I dropped it in, installed the transmission and driveline, filled fluids, almost ready to fire other than priming the oil pump and dropping on the carb. Go to prime it, pump won't turn. I know I turned it over by hand. Can't imagine what happened. Everything has to come back out to deal with it. Might be a "garage find" in 50 years when I'm dead.

It's really simple: The current problem demands your total attention to the exclusion of other problems. When you fix it your attention turns to new problems. If you look hard enough, there's an infinite number of problems to grab your attention. Lather, rinse, repeat.

 

I hear you,the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

 

Just had both valve stems go bad on pass side- then a week later drivers rear acting up- took in and said it's probably the valve stem- nope he told me I had a screw this time but also replaced the valve stem- wife drove the car yesterday and driver's front going flat- checking that out today- so batting 4 for 4! In little more than one week!

 

I think you need to replace that valve stem, "Just in case". HRP

 

Danny, think back when I broke a coil over on the coupe at the deuce run a few years ago?
I bought a new set of shocks and replaced them a few weeks later. less than a week later I broke the new one on the same side again. I used the old one from the other side and it has been almost 4 years and no problem.

 

Remind me, why does the radio have a volume control????

I Finished up the headers and replaced the starter motor. I’m about to replace the bottom air dam and I discover........

The radiator is leaking.

 

It’s OK I have another shoe box radiator. I had it re cored years ago.

It was stored in my Dad’s barn for 20 years. All the outlets were taped up nicely. Then, I notice the dang cap is gone.
I check it out.....
The damn thing is full of nuts.
