I long for the days when the Cuyahoga had an octane rating.

I shared a house in Miami right after I got out of the army. He was a custom painter and did a lot of motorcycle tanks and fenders. He won best paint twice at the world of wheels car show. Once for Tom Finlay's funny car and once for a 48 Indian chief.
He used to sit in his bedroom airbrushing Imron while smoking a joint. He installed a window A/C unit to be his source of fresh air. the house had central air but he he supplemented it with the window unit.
He would come out of his room higher than a kite . After while it started eating his brain cells.
Since my brother was a Dade county cop I figured it was time for me to get down the road before I got busted for living there. The county got on me for running a Corvette repair shop in a residential neighborhood. Good times in Miami in the mid to late 70's.

  3. ........I'm assuming he's no longer with us in the living world.

When I was seeing a lung specialist, he told me it's all with body chemistry. Said he had one patient, mid 60's, smokes cigars non stop, bodyman that painted cars since he was 20. Didn't wear a mask just chomped on his cigar while he painted. Said he had maybe 20% lung capacity loss. Had a 22 yr old, painted over a year, wore a respirator and now couldn't walk across a 25 ft room without gasping for air. Said everyone is different so it makes their jobs harder.

I still prefer to poison myself the old fashioned way, cigars and alcohol...

Yessir, speaking of that, it's almost quitting time. Meeting my banjo player at the local joint for a cigar and a whiskey, maybe two. Gotta keep the head right to drive the Ford, so no more than that...

My gramps poisoned himself. He worked in NYC shoveling crap out of the sewers for 5 years. Then worked in the shipyards puting asbestos into ship hulls for the duration of WW2 and after. Then worked as a plasterer for 30 years when it was embedded with asbestos. Then mingled in some cast iron plumbing with the molten lead hammered into the joints. All the while smoking non filter Pall Mall cigarettes at about 2-3 packs a day. Then he died. At age 81. What a shame that all that crap killed him so young.

When I first was married I worked in a steel mill and when my wife would come to pick up from work she would think the place was on fire from all the smoke pouring out the doors of the building. We had hide our lunches because they couldn't find guys to work there so they would go to the local jails and and hire guys and then put them back in jail after work was over.

Say what you want about taking precautions and it won't happen to me but I've got 2 things to say. 1. My grandfather worked in the coal mines leading the mules starting when he was in second grade. Never was a miner per say and only worked the mines for a couple of years. Still got black lung and died way too young. The end wasn't pretty. 2. My old boss and mentor grew up in an orange grove spraying all kinds of chemicals. Went on to be a mechanic at a dairy. Again exposed to all kinds of solvents and chemicals plus asbestos dust from literally thousands of brake jobs where the first thing you did was blow off all the brake dust with an air hose. He died at 75 from bladder and other cancers. He fought it for over 10 years but again the end wasn't pretty. JMHO.

My FIL was a roll turner at a steel mill. They gave him benzene to clean the rolls with. He died of leukemia. The mill had a bunch of deaths like they all ran out of time at once.

This has run its course, how about getting back to traditional hot rods and customs?
