This thread was about 40 Sedan Deliveries AND the drivability issues of deliveries/panels. Unless you have owned one, you have no idea how un-nerving that blind spot can be. A lot of good driving advise...but nothing on parking one...which I thought was important for him to know....and I included the (non-'40) pics to prove I knew what I was talking about.

I think my advise (now gone) was a hell of a lot more useful than just a bunch of those pretty pictures of '40s. I'm sure @The37Kid knows what a '40 S.Ds looks like...but he may not know the "tricks" to park one.

Funny, this is a three year old thread, I forgot I started it. Had to be thinking of the '40 SD a friend had and was thinking of parting with. I used to be able to put a 24 foot Ryder truck where ever I need to, so driving a SD should be ok. Thanks everyone for posting all the great photos! Bob

 

Yes sedan deliveries aren't for everybody. I had a 37 Chevy delivery and they are a little tricky to navigate around. For some it is like backing a 45ft tractor trailer into a dock. They are still my favorite looking hot rods. Bill

Anyone remember one from the 70's that said Rick's Modern Antiques on the side? Guy owned a body shop out of North Jersey.

 

I Recall That Black 41 Delivery But Can't Find A Photo..

 

My dad used to work with Rick around that time. They drove to the nationals in Detroit together in that delivery one year, and in my dad's model A the next.

 

GOOD: newly found and edited version of a missing photo from a long time ago. It was a little out of focus and the only way to get a decent presentable image was to turn it into a black and white copy. Maybe I should have use it at Halloween as the rounded back portion of the hood and eye strain, made a pumpkin face on the rear hood area.

The GOOD was that it is/was a 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery Deluxe version. The extra power, trans, full upholstery and overall look was good. The BAD was, it needed a lot of work with tires, brakes, suspension, shocks, and wheel balancing/alignment. The core of a hot rod was there, plus some nice extras, but making it a reliable daily driver was necessary, since we only had two cars.

We were a two-some couple with two cars and independence. If one car was always being fixed, then that was not a good sign of a reliable daily driver. BAD, it took some doing with those extras, but they were necessary repairs or replacements. “It was a long time, coming…”

Then, it was a daily driver and we could go all over So Cal, from San Diego up to Santa Barbara and the San Luis Obispo areas. My wife was the secondary driver, but took the sedan delivery for jaunts to her friends’ houses and shopping. On our long, full Northern border to Southern California road trips, we took her newer factory built car for extra reliability. It was a fairly new car at the time.

Those early memories pop up every time a new photo or a surprise photo shows its face in an old folder or album. Garage or attic/closet clean outs are good for the soul… and history.

Thank you for the nice comments. We were at my brother’s first house in the neighborhood of Anapamu and Olive St. Then he built a house in Summerland and finally had a custom warehouse/living space on Yanonali next to Yater’s Surfboards. But, in 1966-68, my wife and I were in Santa Barbara several times a year, as we thought that place was just right for us.

The cliff side beaches, good surf spots, great restaurants and of course, it was at least an excellent stopping place for an overnight rest, prior to going to Big Sur and S.F. (I also wanted to go to the Brooks Institute of Photography, too. It had a good reputation back then.)

State Street and the beaches were like Laguna Beach’s main streets and reminded us of the Height-Asbury area of S.F. We had our 65 El Camino, but did not get our 2nd sedan delivery for several years later. That old house with the sedan delivery photo looks like it was just down the street on Anapamu Street.

Nice photo on the beach parking lot. That looks like Ledbetter Beach near the Southern end of the Santa Barbara Harbor location. It is a very popular spot for surfing when it breaks. The beach is usually crowded as it is below the Santa Barbara City College campus. But, the old saying of "early to bed and early to rise" will keep the surf crowd down somewhat at Ledbetter Beach. Also, a paved parking lot and a short walk to the mini-point break always makes the crowds arrive in greater amounts of surfers/beachgoers.

This old guy made it up there several times during a later time period. Up the So Cal coastline, through Santa Monica/Malibu beaches, of course. My wife and I were “regulars” during this old time period. Later on, visits to my brother and his family, as well as visiting our son at his apartment/going to UCSB was a 4 year regular activity on weekends.

Is there a chance I would have seen that at Frog Follies, as a kid in late 80s?

 

Many years ago at a Two club picnic in Fallbrook Park, I asked Lee why he took the round mirrors off the delivery and added the 4x6 rectangular ones. His answer as I recall was "can't see shit with those little things". Take a look at his delivery, you barely notice them, but they helped.

 

After seeing that Foose yellow car the B pillar and doors of the originals sure dont look as good. Whilst generally appreciating the workmanship of TV builders (well normally their staff) never really a fan of the outcomes but he nailed that SD.
