50's custom rides - Lets see them

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chopped50Ford, Jul 13, 2006.

  1. I have been searching on the board for a thread with custom 50's cars; like the old Barris style or equivalent.

We have others; Taildraggers, longroofs, shoeboxes, mercs and even 60's bellflower styled rides.

Im a 'tard when it come to using the damn search engine. I have not perfected it quite yet.

Any help? or shall we start one w/ this one. :)

Here is a new ride I just got; a bit mild...but on its way to some potential major modifications. :)

Pictures are a great source for ideas or just to dream about :)

'50's style customs seemed to have their own flavor, as I recall, fins and
sectioning was what was the in thing back then.

Joe Ray's '50 Buick built by Metz Custom Shop in Locus, IN is a good example
of fins and section, so is Ron Courtney's '51 Ford. Sectioning was a pain
in the backsides back then, but the results were fantastic, wonder why
there are so little sectioned customs these days?

Here is my 55 Olds, I am going for a circa...1958-9 mild Kustom. Will soon get lake pipes, a mild shave and seeweed flames.

  24. Absolutely love this car. Not that you are looking for it but my 2 cents worth, this car would look killer with some ripple pipe that is molded instead of the standard lakepipes under the rockers....

Here's my '53 from high school. The wheels got shitcanned a long time ago, and the chop job is kinda poor considering I was 15. It'll get redone better the second time around.

Here's my dad's 53 Merc we built from a shell a while back. It's COVERED with doo-dads from old Almquist and Honest Charley catalogs from the 50's and early 60's. He insists that custom cars where he grew up were mostly done like this, not many kids in central NY had chopped and heavily cut cars back then.
