Good for you! A lot of cars that ran on the strip back in the day weren't running straight axles so your car will still look great. I don't know where the current trend of its only a "gasser" if it has a straight axle on it came from but you are correct. It is being overdone. Good for you for not following the sheeple!

  3. On your rear lower quarter panel replacement, did you have to repair the inner panel too? I am working on the same repair and wanted to know what you did . Thank you!

What are you or did you do for the rear suspension?

As you may have noticed I've kind of stalled out. I had a partner to start with and we were going to share the cost 50/50 but when he found out I actually was going to spend some money he let me buy him out. So I haven't done much lately. Now to answer the last two questions, since it was going to be a track only car we didn't worry about the rear inner quarter. However, now I think I may change my mind on that. As for the rear suspension, leaf springs, ladder bars and a 9". Also, I have been re thinking the front suspension and may go straight axle there now rather than replace all of the parts needed on the independent front end. Also like most of these 56s the front crossmember is bad and it locates the lower control arms so it would be easier to replace when using a straight axle. Not going to have the nose crazy high though. Don't give up, this aint over yet.

It's good to hear you're still motivated to work on it. The 428 and top loader will make it a blast to drive.

  7. What mounting location toploader tailshaft do you have?

  8. Don't worry, I'm still watching, and not moving any faster so don't get discouraged.

If this wasn't started so long ago I was going to ask you what you did with the new quarter panel scraps that you cut off to radius the wheel wells. I would have been interested in them. Great project.

11264.jpg 11265.jpg 11266.jpg So, a little progress. The frame has been sandblasted and shot with Rust-oleum. Also an Econoline will give up it's straight axle.

Before I install the front cross member I thought I better get the sand out of the frame from the sandblaster, not to mention a lot of rodent paraphernalia. It's good to have a big winch truck. A BFH and the air gun and it all came out.

The Econoline axle is out. One side would turn the other side was full of mud and locked up. After a couple of hours of jacking with it I was able to get it apart without ruining anything. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

If I remember right,, the Thunderbird emblems on the fenders meant it has the 312 engine. I had a '56 I put a used police interseptor in after I blew up the 272. It was the cheap 2door hardtop. Stick with overdrive. I put on a factory 2x4 intake, Mallory dual pint distributor, and glass packs. Fast car

  26. No, the 292 got the emblems also. The 292 was the 'Thunderbird' motor, the 312 was the 'Thunderbird Special'. Only the 272 got the plain V8 emblems.
