So I've got a trade offer on my 37 buick. For a 29 chevy sedan. The 29 chevy is all original. My 37 buick has been just sitting because I'm not sure what to do with it. And i figure this 29 chevy would be a cool fenderless hotrod.

Is there any market for the original 29 chevy drive train? Or fenders?

Any chance things like a repro metal modelA floor. Will work in it?

Any thoughts or whatnot i should know about when it comes to the 29 chevy?

Get a third party termite inspection on the Chevy before accepting any deals.

As others have said, the body is just a sheet metal skin nailed over a wood structure. I don't know what you value your buick at, but I personally wouldnt pay more than 1000 for a 29 sedan if the wood is rotted.
I am a big fan of early chevys, but you've got to want one real bad, they are not easy cars to build.

Trade a Buick for a Chevy? o_O My first thought would be why the dude with the Chevy wants to trade. If you do trade you better make good friends with an Orkin man:p

Here are pictures of both cars. The buick has to go no matter what. I was told to sell it.

  13. Having helped build a '32 Chevy I can tell you from experience it's a wooden car with metal tacked in place, about half the wood was rotten and the replacement pieces far exceeded the purchase price of the car and was only discovered when the interior was removed.

At the end of the day it is up to you to decide what's right for you, do you posses wood working skills or know someone that does, I can't emphasize enough that you do a thorough inspection before you make a trade. HRP

Sell the Buick and save the cash to buy a non wood bodied car. I wouldn’t touch that Chevy.

    I wouldn't trade my '37 Buick for a brand new 1929 Chevy.

You small enough to fit in the Chevy? I had a 36 I loved but as I got older and fatter it became uncomfortable.

I would rather have the chevy. Replace the wood with box tubing and be done. If you don't and it can be bought for a $1000 let me know.

Not much frame under those Chevs. either.
Ask yourself how happy you would be knowing that wood screws were in the door hinges.

Buick is big but looks solid.. Could be a fun project... Chevy door is already sagging....

  22. That Chevy looks pretty solid. I had one awhile back that only needed a couple of pieces of wood that looked rougher than that. It would be the Chevy for me.

You said the Buick has to go, so sell it and walk away from the Chevy.

  24. The Chevy don't look any closer to driving than the Buick. If you couldn't get the Buick on the road what makes you think you'll be able to get the Chevy driving? Sounds like your just trading one impossible task for another one. I know these Chevys, I've had a 34 up my Ass for 10 years. Anyone that tells ya to just replace the wood with steel is making things sound easy. It's not unless your one Hell of a cabinet builder or Fabrictor and have a well outfitted wood/fab shop. Be it replace with wood or build new steel inner it's a monumental undertaking. If you thought parts for the Buick were hard to find just go shopping for missing pieces for that Chevy.

Sell the Buick. Forget the Chevy.

Save your pennies for a car road or at least more road ready that you can love but more importantly drive.

If you're new to the old car game quickest way to lose interest is to get that Chevrolet. The wood after awhile tends to sag causing all sorts of issues and very expensive to fix. Your car will spend more time of the road while you chase the sagging structure gremlins than on it. They're tin nailed to a wooden structure. Keep the Buick would make a great long distance cruiser.

Joining those who said sell the Buick and look for an easier project than the Chev. They are cheaper than same year Fords for a reason. I used to restore cars for living when I lived in the UK so I had my share of cars with wood frames and - other than simple stuff - we sent those to a specialist car carpenter (yes) if the wood needed redoing. And even then it was always a struggle to put the steel or ally panels back on. Oh: even better if you can get the Buick running before you sell.

This is all why i said earlier. That i was posting this thread. Figured people sho have been around these cars could fill me in before i got over my head. I was hoping the 29 chevy was solid like a model A. And i could build something like these out of it.

Who ever told you that you have to sell the Buick is going to say the same thing about the Chevrolet after it sets for a few years in the same spot.
Sell the buick and get something that runs so whoever is telling you that you have to sell can pack their shit in it and leave.

The only way I personally would even consider the1929 Chevy would be as a stocker.

IE......if all I had to do was put a battery in it, some tires, adjust the mechanical brakes, put a top insert in.....
    Crank it up and Go!

Oh, all that above and get a Termite Bond from Orkin.

For their time, the 6 cylinder Chevy was the most powerful car in that price field.

That’s why Ford dumped the Model A and built the V8.
