Technical First attempt at filling the roof on my 35 5W. Advice needed.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Do it Over, Apr 17, 2020.

  1. Nothing wrong with learning something new rather than just finding a "ready made" piece (in my mind it' better to try and figure out how to make it), just makes it a bit harder when you are trying to wing it. The more information you can give yourself about what the final shape is going to be the easier it is as everytime you change one aspect other aspects change and without a guideline to go by you don't really know what you are changing in relation to the over all panel shape. Keep at it you'll get there!

So IMO this third attempt is a success. Got my buddy Melvin to help by agreeing to wear a mask. I made a new panel and parked out the hole in the roof and wheeled that area with sustained boldness. Amazing what turning up the volume can do. I got the panel to move so fast in comparison to using light pressure. Not perfect but neither am I. My only mistake was not wheeling the center first then wheeling the full area. By doing it on the third pass I can see the lines. Gonna hit some lumpy areas with the shrink disc then trim the edges some.

I've been thinking about how there is such a big difference in the three panels and why. If I had another sheet of 18ga I'd do another panel or two and really focus on keeping a tight and even wheeling pattern. I'd start with smaller shape about 10" in from the hole then another 5" with the last being just to the edge of the trimmed panel. Maybe its time for another steel delivery . Gotta give Melvin a call

Did a bit of dolly work on some ruts. I think it looks pretty good. If I had more steel I'd do another keeping my wheeling pattern much tighter and more uniform. This will do though. I didn't wheel the sides outside the red line. Gonna lightly wheel it in a radius pattern around the perimeter as indicated by the blue lines. I'll take it right to the edge then I'll trim it to fit.

Ya know when that voice tells you not to do something and you do it anyway ? Yeah, I heard it loud and clear and ignored it. Its taco #3 with dents. Now I'll have to take a day off next week to receive a steel delivery. I'll get two sheets of 18ga and a length of 2 x 4 tubing to brace the wheel. I'll get it right eventually but right now I'm ticked off at myself. Think I'm gonna leave this project alone and tweek on my Bird. 20200618_185432.jpg 20200618_185449.jpg 20200618_185458.jpg 20200618_190618.jpg

OK, I didn't quit. Worked out the big flat spots. Its still a taco but it also fits best out of my three attempts. I'll trim it tomorrow and hammer/dolly out the ruts.

Still not quitting. Trimmed a bit off three sides. Gotta round off the front corners more and trim a touch more off the sides. Overall I gotta say I'm kinda proud of how far I've come. Im no longer lost, just confused. I'm tempted to say I'm afraid of that blocking will reveal but I'm not afraid at all. Maybe a touch more wheeling, some hammer dolly and/or shrinking disc. To quote the great and wise SpongeBob SquarePants " Im ready! I'm ready! Im ready! "

Here's what tomorrow holds for me God willing. I had to stop for the night as I was drowning in my own sweat. I also find working while uncomfortable causes me to forget what I know and do the wrong thing. I started hammer/dolley working out small low spots but stopped before taking on the larger low areas. Glad I did because in my mind I was thinking I should hammer up the low areas. Once I got cooled off I realized off hammer dollying us the way to go. I listened to the voice this time :)

End of round 3. Could'nt sleep so I 20200620_173309.jpg 20200621_081839.jpg hit the garage at 7:30a. Haven't done that in decades. Gonna take it off and work it from the bottom on the shot bag. The shrinking disc turned a flat area into a depression. Figure to stretch it out from the back.

    Happy Father's Day

Ding! Ding! End of round 4. Back to the shot bag. Low spots are getting smaller and smaller.

End of rounds 5 and 6. This could end the fight in round 7.

I think this is it. I was fighting with a flat spot that I turned into a sink hole with the shrinking disc. I thought I should just shring from the bottom but that didn't work. I found that it i shrunk the area around it the metal would tighten back up. If I push on it with some force on my finger it will oil can. I seem to remember many cars doing the same. My plan is to tack it down at every cleco and in between with a very small tack. I'm curious to see if the panel tightens up and if so how much. If all is good I'll decide whether to continue picking at the defects or measure it for Bondo. It looks really wavy and dented but its not that bad.

  25. Once you get the thing tacked on, I think you’ll find it easier to bump up the low spots, it’s sorta like jello without being welded down.

Whoomp der it is ? Tomorrow I'll start working some of the wheeling marks with the shrinker disc. Or should I? I've still got a 7-8" flat spot about 9" off the rear edge in the center. Thats the flatest part of the roof. Guess I didn't wheel it enough in the area. Will tightening up the perimeter help turn the flat spot into crown or back into a sink hole? I did learn that when the panel is in free form taco its hard to see any shape. Even when I worked it on the shot bag if I didn't do all I could to hold it flat while hammering I wouldn't see any results. Also discovered laying the shot bag on top of thd roof and hammering up into was much more fruitful than without. All good lessons learned. Thanks for all the helpful comments. Keep em coming ;)

Well, here's another 2 cents worth. Even on Mod A's up thru 36's, we used GM F body tops ie: Camaro , Fireturd, & Buick Regal etc. If you cut it out with some extra side on it , you'll b able to see how close it really is to being able to fit. Hey, it's only a Camaro top ! check it out.
