Have a 56 F100 with pushbutton 727 trans, it work great, but when in "D" it only has first and second, in "1" it has first second and third? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Did you adapt the push button assembly off the Mopar dash? I drove a ‘53 w/‘57 Desoto and cast iron Torqueflite for years. Made a box under the dash out of a chunk of square tubing.
You will have to have throttle link between the carb and transmission to control governor pressure (kick down/up shift).
Yes it is the original assembly but I did not build the truck so not sure what was done? Does each button lead to a certain location?
I have never worked on the pushbutton shifter, but have seen quit a few comments about them needing to be adjusted correctly or not working. Cool truck by the way.
Powerflite was two speed but this is the idea behind the dash control. More details. You do have a R-N-1-2-3 control, right?
Thanks for all the information, I need to think about this for a while, the good news is it works fine the way it is, just have to know what button to push. Again thanks for your help.
Start by adjusting the cable per the above. Get the wife/GF/SO or neighbor man to hold in the ‘R’ button. Iffin that don’t work plan on removing that dash bezel and having a look see.
I guess I should dig out some old manuals and see if I can find the instructions for adjusting the shifter for 56-59 3 speed automatics....I know I have it somewhere. The info you've been given so far, is for different ones.
I have some somewhere as well. I’ll try to look as well Found it, here’s what I have... View attachment 4724311 View attachment 4724313 Let me know if there is something else you need. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
The Control Cable adjustments pics should help.........BUT.........my car, an Oz 1940 Dodge uses a 1962 Oz Chrysler Royal, 313 Poly V8 which used the 3 speed Cast iron Torqueflite and the same button setup as BigP2 shows in his pic.........but the cable when it goes into the gearbox just goes forward and backward so I measured under an Oz late 60's Valiant console between the shifters pivot and console bottom, worked out where the cable had to be located to give to same forward/backward measurement and made a bracket for the outer cable and pin for the inner cable......eventually had a shorter cable made as well..............apart from the fact that the shifter still shows "P" which the gearbox has never had, everything works fine and has done so for about 40 years now..........good fun when the hotrod safety police ask me to start the car in Park.....err.......I got no Park..........lol.........always good to show the local "knowitalls" something new..........Andy Douglas
Cable stretch was a minor issue with the push button deals. I had a 62 Dart with a wedge motor and a push button . It needed an adjustment once when I was out on a road trip. Had to unscrew it from the dash and pull on the cable to make it shift well enough to get home.
I see buttons but not the actual shift mechanism. OP stated he had a 727 transmission. It’s hard to mistake for the cast iron version.
Wow! I thank you guy's for all the help. I will post pictures of the transmission and shift mechanism this morning.
