So i have a after market tilt column with the gm spline shaft .. i needed / wanted to run my 53 Merc steering wheel that I have .... I started out thinking I'd cut out the center of the streeing wheel and fabricatic a new 3 bolt center ... which i did ... however, I found a ford steering shaft in my scrap pile ... figures!!

So i removed the upper shaft , turned it down to fit in the ford shaft , installed a pin , and welded it all up ... it came out pretty nice for not having a metal lathe .... here are the pictures I took along the way ..

    Right or wrong , this is how I over came the problem.. 20200606_100835.jpg 20200606_100849.jpg 20200606_130655.jpg 20200606_134303.jpg 20200606_134303.jpg 20200608_081317.jpg

This allowed me to run the steering wheel with no modifications... however, like I said , I had already cut out the center in preparation for the new center I had made .... so now ill show you some pictures of that , and the correct adapter to fit this steering column ( cuase there is a few gm ones out there) 20200605_170313.jpg 20200605_203612.jpg 20200605_193206.jpg 20200605_193257.jpg 20200605_234415.jpg 20200605_235232.jpg 20200605_235242.jpg 20200603_133819.jpg

You could take some side load off of the drill press spindle by building a box and cutting it in half through the bottom. Bore a hole, the diameter of the shaft below the bearing/collar, through the split. Clamp or screw the box together around the shaft and clamp it to the drill press table.
I love using what you got to get what you need threads.
