Anybody know the size/thread count of the machine screws that hold Fenton wheels' caps on? Thanks, fellas.
Whether they were always the same size I don't know, but mine were #10-32. some other companies also used the same size, American Racing and Ansen IIRC.
I've run into both 8/32 and 10/32, I'd recommend running a 10/32 tap in there in any case. If you use stainless screws, use plenty of anti-seize... actually, use it no matter what kind of screws you use.
I'll add that if you have issues with the screws loosening in use (and I have), put a small dab of blue locktite under the head of the screw. DO NOT put it on the threads...
In aluminum they really should be 10-24 or what is considered coarse thread... I can’t believe you don’t have a thread chaser kit. A couple of bucks a HF.
Thanks guys! I do have a thread chaser & tap/die set, but thought I'd better ask the HAMB before risking damaging some expensive wheels. Or worse, embarrass myself carrying a wheel & tire to the fastener sample board at Home Depot.
Just Gary Fenton Gyros are actually 8-32, same as early Torque Thrusts, early US Indy and even late model Team lll five spokes, that's all I took the time to check quickly.
I'd still take them out to 10/32, those don't break off as easy.... Besides, if any are broken off, usually by the time you get the remains out 10/32 will leave a thread while the 8/32 may not.
The cap ears are prone to cracking as it is, opening the holes bigger would make them that much more so.
Mine are 8-32. Some of the threads are kinda worn but none that won't clean up. No need to "super-size" to 10-32... at least this time. Thanks again, guys.
