Well, just like the thread title, I GIVE UP! I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

  3. OK, here we go.......If you have to drive up a steep driveway, would you rather have to replace these brackets or the entire bumper assembly when it gets torn off. Cheaper to replace one or both brackets than an expensive chrome bumper and its' accessories. Once you heard the brackets scrapping the street when you made the transition to the driveway, you knew to take it slow.

Were these pieces only used on Pontiacs or did they appear on other GM cars? A one year only experiment/trial of some type?
Only a chassis assembly manual knows...;)

It's got to be for the jack. It looks like it will flatten the spring and allow the tire to rise without having to lift the car as high? It would be easy for the OP to try and either prove or disprove it.

I have them on my pontiac as well and that’s what I alway thought. Back in the day with dirt roads you dint want to get down under the car in your Sunday best.

Mystery solved. But, is there a special attachment on the jack to latch onto the bracket? I would be afraid to just jack up against a curved 1/4" bracket.

I figured as much...but couldn't find an owner manual. Thanks....

It makes sense, it makes jacking the rear wheel off the ground easier. Apparently, not easy enough that many other cars had it.

But there is no “bump stop” to limit movement...

I guess I’ll weld up an adapter for the jack that I don’t have yet.

Something about that photo worries me...probably works fine on flat ground. So why did they stop using them?

    Looks quite dangerous
Now now only do you have a ton or more of steel supported by the jack it also has stored energy of the spring under tension.
Get Joe Fumbles in there and it's a recipe for disaster

Seen this many times. Always wonder how he got it pushed up like that. Must have had a lot of help. Also welding, hope he had a non vented gas cap..
