I must have miscalculated, it looked like 1 mile in 8.5 seconds, it was actually only 329 miles in just under an hour

last time i saw this done was a mechanic shop decades ago-they had the speedo chucked in their sun dist tester and just let it run..

I take it that popping the bezel off and taking the odometer out and rotating the numbers and putting it back together wasn't an option?

 

I had a model A speedometer rebuilt. Hooked it to a drill and ran it ahead to 42k+ so it read the same as speedo being replaced. Worked great. Added another 100k on the road before I sold that rod.

There was a guy a guy in Cleveland, Tn. who made a good living doing that.
he got 8 years in the pen for turning back speedo's.

 

truth is I just had it apart, well the bezel and glass off anyway, but didn't want to dig any deeper.
put it back together and re-crimped the bezel.
turning it back here was a second thought.

 

so, the whole legality thing..
it's the odometer that is in question,
not the vehicle?
it can be an aftermarket speedometer,
no knowledge of what car it was in
or what it will be going into.
the question is how many miles are on the part,
not the whole?

 

There were some guys in Murray, Ky. that used to run back odometers. Most of them got jail time too.

 

Think the statute of limitations has spun. Besides, it's clearly a boat odometer.

 

I would think the illegal part is not turning back an odometer but representing the new reading as actual miles on the vehicle, all this is just a guess though!

It just so happens that the car I'm building will have exactly 34,777.0 miles on it when finished.

 

Yep, in the 70's you could walk on a lot of used car lots and every two year old car on the lot had right around 22K on them. Had one come into the dealer shop that I worked in in Texas that we had serviced the first two years of it's life and the shop had service records showing it had right at 75K on it when it was last serviced that showed 23 and change on it when it came in for service with a new owner who had bought it off a used car lot. The guys wasn't too happy when our service manager told him it had over 70K on it and showed him the service records. The judge who did the trial over he lawsuit the car owner filed on the car lot wasn't real happy with the owner of the owner of the used car lot when the complete service records for the car were brought out. Guy who bought the car from us traded it to another dealer that wholesaled it and both transactions had the correct mileage recorded.
On the other hand turning the odometer on a fresh built hot rod doesn't mean anything legally as you aren't trying to represent it as anything it isn't. Turning the clock back on a stone stock "classic" to show that it had low miles for it's age aka the only driven by a little old lady to the beauty shop and church pitch is as crooked as all get out though. Just as is trying to pawn one of those older cars that went over 100K and flipped back to 0 and started over as a low mileage car.

 

When I worked for the Govt. Federal Law Enforcement Training Center they let a contract for used police cars to use for training vehicles.
In the contract it stipulated that if it had over a certain number of miles it had to have a new transmission. We bought a dozen Crown Victoria's from a company. I won't mention their name here.
They all came in about a thousand miles less than the limit so they didn't have to have replacement
transmission's. when the purchasing agent got the paper work on the cars. The company had bought them from one police dept. The mileage was stated on the auction paperwork and clearly showed the odometer's had been rolled back.
The Govt did not prosecute the company's owners just banned them from ever submitting a bid for future sales. the Govt attorney said it would cost too much to pursue the case.
So the company got away with it. I was pissed and it was one of the tipping points to me retiring early. I had done a lot of work to verify the true mileage of the cars.

 

I had a friend that worked for a company that turned back speedometers. Earney was instructed to take them apart and set them at a certain figure. Well he didn’t like doing that, so everyone of the speedometers got a “ smudge” on the inside of the glass!
