Event Coverage Mohawk Valley Vintage Championship Night at Fonda Sppeedway

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Robert J. Palmer, Jun 7, 2020.

  1. Fonda speedway had an open practice last night, which my club the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds were invited to participate in.

I knew I missed I but I had know idea how much until I heard the engines start and warm up.

We had some rule too follow set forth by New York state with over sight by Montgomery County but boy was it great to feel clay on my skin again!

Jimmy Fugal's clone of his last stock frame car-

Larry Hoyt's 48(I think) Chevy coupe-

So good to see Larry "AJ" Hoyt is still alive and kicking. I grew up in Rhinebeck hanging around Gordon Ross's NASCAR modified.

  4. He wasn't driving, I would say the driver was late 40's or so.

I hope didn't they hurt the engine, the first practice practice the car was running rough. They worked all night the last practice it sounded better but the headers were glowing red hot all the way around the track.

There was an engine failure in the tube chassis class (for mid 70s-late 80s style car before the wide bodies), the hood and driver were covered in oil and the belly pan was full.

Great post Robert. In the third picture of the Jimmy Fugal car, what am I looking at with the leaf spring? Preload the suspension on one side? I love the chassis detail shots!

  6. Yes, it is a commonly called a jack bolt to adjust cross weight or wedge with a slider.

This is the set up on the blue number 2 sedan

  8. A clone of the 115 owned by Ken Tremont and driven Chunk Ely clone

The Tremont family 115 have Lebanon Valley Speedway from the opening of the track, Kenny Tremont Jr. is in his late Fifties and still winning races, Ken Jr.'s son is now running and wining races.

Note jack bolts on the spring mounts.

  9. As good as it was to be back at the track, it was so surreal to see the grandstands absolutely empty.

God, I miss racing! Here in Minnesota, everything has been shut down for a few years, mainly due to insurance complications. Youse guys seem to be a little later than my car, but I'd love to give you a run anyway! 102side.jpg

  17. That's what so good about the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds the president knew there where stock frame cars out there with no where to run, so she started the vintage antique class.

I am building a car for this class-

We used to run intermission shows (vintage only), but even that got shutdown. The last race I went to, they didn't want me to run because the car doesn't have an approved fuel cell. I am not cutting up this original well known race car (Minnesota state Stock Car champion in 1966) to cobble in a fuel cell. I'm getting to old and stiff to race anyway.:(

The "late models" of today are way faster than these beasts from the past, but they just don't do it for me.
    Thx for posting this.
