  15. {WICARNUT} I liked your Buick. It reminded me of a concept coupe I did. The top would come off like the T Birds, and the Corvettes. 20160908_204937(0).jpg

    Hello,

Back when the TOMMY IVO GROUP was starting, it was known that the Buick motors, big and powerful with carbs or later on Hilborn Injection would end up in someone’s project. In 1957, Daddy’ Auto Body was such a recipient. The colorful yellow full streamlined FED was pretty advanced for the times. There were only a few race cars that were streamlined.

Kenny Safford moved to dragsters from stock car racing. He experienced the thrill of their performance at the wheel of Don Johnson’s streamlined, Daddy’s Auto Body top gas car. That first ride in 1958 hooked Kenny on driving. (from that experience, in 1960 he teamed up with Don Gaide and then Don Ratican to run as the famous Sour Sister’s FED )

Daddy’s Auto Body winning the A/Gas Dragster class. Look who won the A Street Roadster Class!!!
It was a Road Kings outing at Pomona Dragstrip January 5, 1958.

Here is a great story on Daddy's Auto Body, Buick powered dragster from 1958. They were very successful in So Cal and then ideas started flying around in the San Fernando Valley.

This time with an Ivo stroker motor (including the famous Tommy Ivo, up swept individual header pipes...) in Daddy’s Auto Body FED, and some new colors...

  19. Het Ron, can I please park here too? It's an exclusive club. I cannnot resist.. The Bubble T club. Dig that front end and cityscape too. I roughed mine out of a drawing of a clean local car (stock hardtop). Another one thrown into being for the F.A.S.
Some very cool posts this week, already. Thank you posters and attendees.

  20. It's a particularly nice one too Roo. Steve was the bloke I watched in the 70's. Huge influence.

Hey Ron I think this might have been the final version of the Nash Rambler with a little unworldly influence.o_O

    Hello,

That is a nice drawing of that bubble top Thunderbird. Back in those early photo shooting days, I was able to sit and then drive a similar, odd looking Thunderbird in a park up in Hacienda Heights, CA. It was based on a similar model Thunderbird, but most of the identifying factory pieces were all molded into a smooth body.

The owner was a friend and allowed me to drive the vehicle in a park, where we were doing the photo shoot. I almost hit a tree using the single stick that controlled the wheels. It was a jet type steering, with no actual steering wheel. It was the weirdest experience that I ever encountered.

Despite taking plenty of photos, they were all rejected by every magazine submitted. It was too far out there and there was no class to associate the custom Thunderbird. It was not a hot rod, custom or... it was just an odd space looking vehicle with a bubble top.

Did I say that with the bubble top lowered, it was extremely hot inside? Even with the A/C on, it was hot. It was sunbathing in a sun room that moved. The owner could go a lot faster and steer better than me, obviously. But, as a courtesy of being asked to photograph his creation and then getting rejected by all editors, I gave him all of the photos for his collection. (including several printed and mounted in a custom frame.)

I have no idea where the Thunderbird is located or even if the custom Thunderbird is still around. It was almost 50 years ago. It was just one of those experiences that sticks out in the memory banks, until a drawing or two come out of nowhere.

    Thanks...
    It was not Starbird's Thunderbird...either.

Very realistic, a seemingly doable idea. Nicely done!
