Kent Fuller's shadow as he's on his roof for the overhead pic. Note the sprung front end.

    Thanks, Mr.Nailhead…Lee

    Hello,

Custom shadows present themselves at the oddest times. Here is a rare photo from the Tommy Ivo/Kent Fuller archives. It is one of the earliest photos of Tommy Ivo’s single Buick FED from 1958. (Pre-Hilborn injection) It is an odd moment when one thinks about how this famous single engine Buick FED went full circle from Stromberg Carburetors, to Hilborn Injection, to a 671 blower and back to Stromberg carburetors in its lifetime…(to Don Prudhomme)

My brother and I used to see Tommy Ivo’s injected Buick at Lions almost weekly, when we were involved with the 58 Impala and the 1940 Willys Coupe. I was able to get some films shot during this historic time period in West Coast drag racing. The 1958-59 time period was a transitional experiment for the Tommy Ivo camp. From the single injected Buick to the 671 to the famous Twin that made its own history.

...The Jado Coupe shared by Hamber @CW's40TPU. He is one man who really had close ties to this incredible era of Hotrod...I hope he is still with us as he has not been on in quite some time...

I know people shadows are taboo in Photography but in old Hotrod pics I feel they actually add an interesting dynamic...

    Two for tea…

    Hello,

First of all, that push bar for the Flathead roadster has to be the most innovative set up seen in quite some time. It is pure backyard garage…pun intended as it might be a modified garage door spring. It gives some flexibility, with a truck or car bumper pushing for the start up in those old drag racing days.

If this were actually in the 1950s, that spring would not be a permanent application as those old garage springs were known to snap and send flying parts all over. Especially with a side force using it every time it rolled to the starting line. in the later years, there was a safety bar inside of garage door springs, just in case those springs wanted to explode and fly all over the cars and garage.

In this era, there were no rollers, no electric motors, just plain backyard garage ingenuity. But, for the sun playing tricks on the eye, the shadow is just a “little T for a T.”

The two roadsters were typical of those in the smaller displacement class designations. Although they could both be modified street roadsters put into the regular roadster class because they did not have mufflers or fenders.

Time marches on including backyard hot rod ingenuity.

...Thanks @jnaki, backyard injinuity indeed, the bent what I believe to be a steering arm is also very interesting...pre universal joint days I suspect...and they looked to be racing into the later day Sun...

@Rick Coast I sent you a PM...and did you have a response about the Timbs Custom? I do believe it was burned in the Wildfires last year and also heard it may be resurrected...

stogy I was cut off before message. the timbs custom is and was awesome, would be a shame if it was burnt in the wildfires. hope it can be saved. I can only imagine other custom and hot rods were lost in the fires. what a nightmare that has to be.
