I can find no one that lists the correct master cylinder for my 55 Chieftian. I have tried ordering 2 that say they have the correct one and both times it's one that mounts to the firewall. Mine mounts to the frame. See photo. Everyone says the one on the left fits. Mine is the one on the right. Anyone know where I can buy a new one?
Do a search with the serial/part numbers on your old unit. Odds are it’s a Wagner unit. If so they have a website to search it. I’d consider rebuilding it. Also make your search on google.
It's a delco. I did call them they said that they have the correct one in stock. I hate ordering without at least seeing a photo but I took the plunge.
Did you take it apart and see how rusty the bore is? I just rebuild the original MC on my 55 chevy bread truck, it's a similar design unit. Fifteen bucks for a kit... I'll replace the cylinder if rust is a problem, but I'd rather just install a new kit if I can.
I've used Fusick in the passed. Call to see if your numbers match Olds unit. https://www.fusickautomotiveproducts.com/products.asp?dept=967
Mid Canada Suspension in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. Norm is very knowledgeable for this stuff and has a massive inventory of vintage stuff. (204) 475-3399
The above link to Apple is my choice. They sleeve and rebuild you cylinder. Quick turn around last time I used them. That will only help if you have a cylinder though.
there are some on Ebay this was the cheapest new.https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Brake-...743307?hash=item23d2380a0b:g:i0kAAOSwlj9eLNMP
They rebuild well if the bore is not a hot rusty mess. Even having it rebuilt is a good option, spend your $$ once.
If you cant turn one up there are guys advertising in Hemmings that will put a stainless sleeve in your bore so you can kit it.
yeah, the wrong one is a chevy MC. Perhaps it fits some Canadian pontiacs, so someone decided it must work for all of them?
Could the problem here be related to whether the OP's Pontiac was built to U.S. or Canadian sales specs? Seeing that the car is in Canada Alaska . . . ? I think it's the 11th Province. They've got like a 20 year lease on the place. (thanks for keeping me honest, Jim . . .) I owe you one.
I agree with rebuilding what you have, maybe even as far as having it sleeved if necessary. What you have now is much better quality of the new offshore junk you will be receiving. My 49 dodge I just cleaned it up and stuck new rubber cups in it, works fine and was ~$3 Sadly I did have to replace the wheel cylinders with modern crap.
Yep.....rebuilt my Studebakers for years....until someone figured most forklift's MC's are only a 1/16 off.....
I went through the same thing with my 55 Buick. I had it re-sleeved at a local machine shop, they got the sleeve in cock-eyed so that screwed up that idea. I ended up installing a dual M/C for a 67 full sized Olds with a 4 drum set up. Cost was about $25 plus a little fabricating, works great!!
To everyone who missed it, he already ordered one. To the OP, I've always had good luck with CPR for Pontiac parts, as you found out they have parts that aren't listed on the website. It's always good to check with a phone call. Hopefully you'll get the right master cylinder, please report back when it arrives.
I also ordered quite a few other parts from them. Later that day I received a tracking number. They shipped the same day. Wonder of wonders it won't take 2 to 3 months to get parts. Good service from them. Two of the parts I had questions about and the guy I was speaking to on the phone went and pulled the parts to answer the questions. Nice.
