We are leaning towards a good set of wagon tail lights or a bullet style. Looks like there is a market for bullet tailights for 55-56 Fords.

  3. those 55/56 Mercury wagon tail lights with a set of Lee lenses look so good for a mild custom. You can always run stock tail lights as well until you score a pair and swap them out. So one way to be able to meet deadlines on getting the car up and driving and then tinker with it as you go.

Just looked and there is a set of 55/56 mercury wagon tail lights for sale on ebay right now. Not the cheapest set. They seem to run what a set of decent 60 Chrysler's run.

There is an NOS 1960 Dodge tail light on there that is super nice, but alas $325 for one.

IMO, the 55/56 Mercury wagon tail lights are the best looking tail lights if you have the real estate to put them onto the car and keep the potmetal trim. When I originally put my 49 Ford F1 Pickup together, I was going to put them on the 49 F1 on the back of the fenders... until I actually got one. They are huge and wouldn't fit on the back of the fender.

EDIT: The picture which I posted are not lights that I actually have, I just pulled the picture off the internet.

The company that sells Lee Lenses sells the Merc wagon lights in fiberglass. Maybe an option for those wanting a painted no chrome look.

Sorry bud. No. I sent your a PM.

Oh, just to clarify, that picture I posted is just one from the internet, not the real picture of the one I actually had. I only had one and it was trash, just for fitment.

I'd pass on anything except merc wagon tail lights. I'd use your stockers until you find what you really want.

  15. '56 DeSoto would work too; they're not quite as tall, less body work. The problem with mid-'50s mopars is finding replacement taillight lenses. The OEM ones tend to fade/crack rather badly and there's only one guy reproducing them, and he's slloooowwww… I've heard of guys waiting over a year...

I have never really looked at a 1957 Desoto. That is pretty custom in itself. That would make a cool mild custom.

And the icing on the cake is I have the rear bumper with space saucer lights and lenses. You just need the the upper lenses.:)

I actually bought the bumper set years ago to debate using then in the rear of my ‘59 Chevy pick up or take the lights off , shortened the bumper for a custom look on the front but stayed with originals.

I haven't yet. I think she is wanting to put 57 Ford lenses in it. We found an old R&C article from the mid 50's that covered the conversion. I'll check out the auction. Thanks for thinking of us.

  22. those lights look good in 59 Chevy's and would look good in a 57 Chevy fin for something custom.
