Give thanks to those that served, are serving and will serve. I am teaching my kids 7 and 5 to be grateful and understand the meaning of memorial day. Its not just a day off, but a moment to reflect and be grateful for those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for us and for this country.

I was at the grocery store yesterday and a fella with a Vietnam Vet hat was approaching us in the aisle. I stopped and thanked him for his service. Hopefully my kids will learn by example and do the same.....

    Thanks...
My father served in WW II ; he was a SeaBee. He never would talk about the war...ever! Mother said she saved a cigar box with his medals, ribbons and commendations I never saw them. He did have a big scar on his shoulder I thought maybe a car wreck he said no it was from a bayonet. When I asked him about it he may have said one sentence which was the closest I ever got to a "war story". That was 50 years ago and we were swimming in the lake behind the house. He's passed now and all I really remember was his love of cars and racing...I won't be able to ask him anything else for a while now. By the way is nickname was "fearless Fred"
I guess I should celebrate Memorial Day but it's not like Christmas, Easter or Thanksgiving it's different. RIP "pop"

Remember I live in Canada, but today I was having lunch in Wendys when the MILITARY TAPS was played over their Audio System, I stood up to attention and other people eating thought I was NUTS.
I just could not sit there, knowing all my American friends are paying there respects to their Fallen Heroes. God Bless America.

Roddin-Shack, I know what you mean! Went to local parade on Sunday as my son was marching with the veterans. When the colors passed, I took off my subvets ball cap and held it over my heart. I suddenly felt conspicuous as there was no action by most of the parade watchers. They made no notice of the color guard. We have raised a nation of people who are ignorant of the ettiquite regarding our nation's colors! A sad state of affairs. Very glad this thread came to the forefront again, Harm's words are timeless and heartfelt. We should all heed them and never forget!

Thank you for sharing! I will pull out the Buick on Monday and call upon my Grandfathers, my friend Stanley and a fallen Marine Mathew Wyatt to ride with me. After the ride I will crack open a beer and toast to the hero's who gave it all for us..

I'll wager the percentage of vets on the HAMB is greater than the average population percentage. Lets hope this Memorial Day everyone pauses and says a prayer for those who served and didn't come home, those that served, and those who serve in harm's way as I write this. God Bless!

I didn't forget but maybe some others did so your post is timely.

And several of my buddies are with me wherever I go and it has been close to 50 years. They used to be a little cumbersome at night but I got used to them and actually looked forward to seeing them.

Last year I visited the Wall on Memorial Day. Every time I go, I bring along two airplane sized bottles of Jack Daniels. I drink one and leave the other at the base for my buddies. This last time after my little ritual, I turned around to see a park policeman standing behind me next to a "No Alcohol Allowed "sign. As I left, he shook my hand and walked away.

Thank you for reviving this thread. It's the first time I've seen it. Please forgive my not realising the significance of this date as I'm in Uk and we have rememberence Sunday in November. My eyes were full of tears reading the first post and also the post about Fred.
God bless all those who protect our freedom wherever they are and wherever we might live.

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one.
And tho' sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today.
He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today.
When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell their whole life stories, from the time that they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land
A guy who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow who, in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life?
A politician's stipend and the style in which he lives
Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives.
While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal and perhaps, a pension small.
It's so easy to forget them for it was so long ago,
That the old Bills of our Country went to battle, but we know
It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand,
Would you want a politician with his ever-shifting stand?
Or would you prefer a soldier, who has sworn to defend
His home, his kin and Country and would fight until the end?
He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,
Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.

A humble BUMP of an 8 year old thread... Lest We Forget

They not just names on a tin tag. Each one had a heartbeat, a smile, a tear, a laugh, somebody they loved and loved them back, a history, a story, a sense of duty,.... And my unwavering gratitude.
