What a neat pick! Does anybody have an idea of where this is taken? Looks East coast but that is just because I can’t think of anywhere over here that would look like that.

If I remember correctly that is in NYC and the Vette may be a 409 or some other off beat engine.

I really don’t know for sure. I found the picture on the internet and it reminded me of some old projects that I used to see before these cars became valuable.

  7. Man o man does this Vette have the look. All it needs is a set of Cragar S/S and some injector stacks coming out of the hood!

The 57 is a great looking car and it is a bit hard to figure it out. Sometimes perspective throws off the front wheels to where they look like they may have been moved forward. The rear wheels look like it was possibly a modified eliminator car although the three point bar and the up stance seems to make me question if it ran competitively past the 60s. Car does have a cool look to it though.

Same question for me. For reference: I am NOT a drag guy.
However, from somewhere in the dark recesses of time around 1964, I remember SOME drag race sanctioning body(s) allowed wheelbase changes to SOME classes.
IIRC it began with Mopar Super Stock cars that the rear leaf springs could be reversed front-to-rear to move the rear axle forward a couple inches to get more weight on rear axle and still be legal. The 2% Wheelbase Rule. Of course if a little is good, more has to be better and before you knew what was happening F/X Factory Experimental class blew up into a big thing. Also IIRC some people like Landy and Sox/Martin moved front wheels forward too. I watched from a distance as this was happening.
Back to the Corvette. Could this car have the front wheels moved forward leaving the rear axle in the stock location and comply with some Modified Sports Production class rule?
    Asking because I don't know.
ETA: There was one car that came through Tom Johnson's shop in Dallas (primarily a sports car shop) that had wheelbase work done on it but I remember it being a Pontiac, maybe one of Hine Pontiac/Monk King's 1963 421 Tempest cars. Had Tony Casarez do the welding - he was an artist of a welder.

Boodlum, I know of some FX cars that of course moved the rear axle and front axle forward although not too familiar with Vettes that followed suit. Vettes in the mid 60s when the altered wheelbase cars were in vogue ran in stock, stock sports, modified sports and modified production (possibly some in altered at some local tracks). In all of those classes you could not change the wheelbase (at least under the stated rules). It was possible to run altered where you could move the wheelbase as it only had a minimum wheelbase. There were some Vettes that ran in the FX classes (such as Vicious Vette) so they could have moved the axle I suppose. That car and others like it though had no problem pulling the wheels and their only problem was really being super competitive against some of the early "funnies".

I am not sure many guys did move the axle forward as the old Vettes seemed to handle terribly when they made too many changes (and also when they ran with 25% setback). I think a couple of Corvettes got wadded up when they changed things up too much.

  11. Cool to know the story behind the pic..I miss the old days of Street racing...for me the mid 80’s into late 90’s....

crash.jpg ppih0452.jpg ppih0430.jpg I ran across more pics of the 64 fuelie my dad co-owned with his friend and driver Thom Jamison. It was new off the show room floor and it was run in the 1964 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Pictured is my dad and also me behind the wheel already learning how Corvettes attract the girls. It brought all the neighborhood kids over for a closer look. Adjustments.JPG Adjustments.JPG Adjustments.JPG Adjustments.JPG As stated earlier is this thread it was totaled in a crash when a Jeep came down the mountain during one of the practice runs at the Brown bush corner.

Quick85 it's magic! Thanks, I for one have been fortunate enough to have seen those sights plus hundreds more. My wife of 49 years has been my copilot in all of our travels. Mostly in hot rods or modifieds of one sort or another. The most memorable was 13,000 mi. in 6 weeks in a 36 Willys 4 door sedan, back seat filled to the top with camping equipment, luggage and most importantly cooler. Lived in Flagstaff AZ for 5 years and that's where I'm going after my demise.
