Hi folks. Anyone know if replacement solenoids are available for late 60’s Saginaw 3spd overdrive transmission? If not is this a rebuildable part? Any help appreciated. JDorlac
Hi, welcome to the Hamb. Let me google that for you... https://www.fifthaveinternetgarage.com/overdrive_parts.php kind of pricey. Measure the length of the shaft, I think the chevys were all 1", but better check. Did I mention, they're expensive? If you're into winding coils, you might be able to rebuild an old one. Good luck.
I think all those o/d units were Borg Warner's. Try here. https://www.vintageautogarage.com/Borg-Warner-12-Volt-6-Volt-Overdrive-Solenoid-p/odsrb.htm might be just as pricey, depending on what you have.
The overdrive unit themselves were made by Borg-Warner, and attached to vaious manufactureres 3 speed transmissions. You might also try garagemotorsports.com; they rebuild and sell the entire transmissions and parts. for the 3 speed/overdrives. There are also used ones for sale on that auction site we all know and love. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Late Saginaw OD's are BW & have a unique solenoid. The shaft length is 1-1/4" long as opposed to the common 1" length on most BW overdrives. More scarce & pricey.
Hey, JW; Depends on what's wrong w/the sol, mechanical or electrical. Open the sol up, n check the wiring. If coil isn't shorted, or fried, may just be damaged (broken wire) at the soldered joint. A typical(cheap) fix is to unwind a turn or two, resolder to tab. Won't hurt the performance of the coil. Worth checking. Marcus...
