Here's some seldom seen pictures of the right hand side of the engine, where you can see the magneto, external pump drive for the fuel injection, and a magnificent set of headers.

What is the grille surround on this from ?
Looks like a BB truck, but appears to be larger, or is it just the camera angle ?

    Hello,

60 years ago around this time, my brother and I went to the 2nd annual Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in 1960. It was like a couple of teenagers at Christmas morning. There were hot rods and race cars there that we had never seen before. It definitely was an excellent adventure far from home. Before this big meet in March, we had gone to the late December drag race event at Riverside Raceway in 1959. We thought that was the top of the pyramid. But, this one put on by the Bakersfield Smokers was huge!

Prior to this big event at Bakersfield, our favorite Model A Roadster was Tony Nancy’s red 29. That was a show quality roadster that won plenty of accolades. We had seen that red roadster in plenty of magazines and photo spreads.

But, this green roadster we saw at Bakersfield caught our attention. It seemed like a cool modified roadster, a little rough, a little old school and looked ready for action. Nick Cirino’s Durfee Automotive roadster was definitely an eye catcher. It simply said to everyone that it was ready for business.

Burkhart, Brammer, and Burns '29 roadster, Rudy Perez photo, at Half Moon Bay. Mike Burns in the seat, "Big George" Burkhart (6'4", over 300 lbs.) standing behind the roadster, and Everett "Hippo" Brammer bending by the engine. The blown fuel Desoto had quite the exhaust note.

  15. My Uncle's roadster in 1949 waiting on the latest Navarro 3 pot manifold and the new Sharp heads for the run at Bonneville which he didn't make in 1949 - it would be 1950 it's only time. He hadn't done the windshield yet on the Cabriolet body - although the most expensive in the Ford line when new - it was the nighest cheap body he could find - as Roadsters were more in demand. I am a big fan of “A” roadsters, my Dad got this one at the end of world war 2, for $100.00. I rode in it before I can remember, first car I ever drove... 42530E86-F849-45C4-8515-AB65C57D11A6.jpeg 95FB6059-1D06-4EC0-B911-715012DF8E52.jpeg

    Hello,
When I was filming race cars at Lions Dragstrip as a teenager, I could spot just about any style or model of the coupe/sedan/roadster, etc. It helped that before I got set up in my filming position, I wandered the pits to see which drag racing hot rod I was going to be on the lookout from the movie set up position. As small as the objects were, on the big, pull down movie projector screen at home, these race cars came to life in real action sequences. Then my brother and I would see who could name the racers and hot rods shown on the live action.

The names of the three roadsters we liked were easy back then. After 56 years of sitting around in the original metal film reel canisters, they were finally digitized. Then the world was totally confusing, as those long ago memories of who, what, when went out of the window, with so much time since those teenage days. Now, I have two of the three on this film. The last two were the Model A roadsters, with and without the stock grille. Both were fast in their classes.

upload_2020-5-20_4-17-4.png Harrell Engines Red 1929 Ford Roadster

The first modified roadster is still nameless and has been researched pretty well, except for perusing many years of Drag News Weekly papers and early 1959-60 Hot Rod Magazines over the years. If anyone finds the little Candy Red Modified Roadster with scallops in any old magazine, please send me a PM asap. A reward will be given back to those who have the certified information, via photos or magazine articles.

These were the days of just modified, pretty much stock bodied roadsters with varying motor combinations to make class racing exciting. Then as the years went by, the Modified Roadsters were phased out into the Altered Roadster Class and finally, lumped into the Altered Class with coupes and sedans. No more tie ins with actual roadsters that used to race and drive on the street if possible. Associating with race cars because you owned one or your roadster was the same year or model.

Anything built by Larry Braga - his signature sectioned cowl and weed scraping stance does it for me.
