Can '53 F2 rear brakes be used on 42-48 spindles? The ones I am looking at don't have emergency brake mechanisms, bolt pattern locating hole looks close.
Interesting....how big are those brakes and what if any offset does the backing plate have. Curious what drums you would out on them.

53 wouldn't be an F-2 it would be a F 250 One source says they use the same shoe another doesn't so that may need some research.
Seb, if they don’t have e brake mechanisms, are they front brakes? I’ve used them on my Avatar up front with Buick drums and 12”- 2” shoes on ‘37-41 spindles.
They utilize a driveshaft drum brake system. Very easy to add E brakes to them,as I did on my build thread “original paint coupe”
The park/emergency brake is mounted on the back of the transmission. Pretty standard issue on trucks larger than a 1/2 ton back in that era.
They are bendix double action, pre 53 were single action..Not much sculpture to backing plates as they look pretty much flat. Seller says they are 12x2. I have read later shoes and wheel cyl can make 2-1/2 wide and 3" with the right suspension somewheres around '60's. I think the Buick drums will handle the 2-1/2 but don't know about the 3"..
I'd say that you had best take a look at them measuring tape in hand or have him take current photos with the measuring tape showing the exact distance across the shoes as they sit on the backing plate and the width of the shoe. Rock auto gives shoe numbers for 53 F250 but no exact sizes but shows both front and rear to be the same. If the rears worked on round back spindles again I would think that someone had figured that out.

I got the '53 F250 rear brake assemblies, see post #10. Bolt hole pattern and locating dia. fit on square back ['42-'48] spindles that I have so they should fit round backs too.. They are 12" x 2", see post #6.
I just found my notes: I read where a guy put together some big brakes for his hot rod..He used '53 F250 backing plates and '67-72 F250 2-1/2 wide shoes [not sure but probably wheel cyl/hardware too.] and Buick finned alum drums on Wilson early Ford hubs on early Ford square back spindles..He also said that 3" wide shoes were available..He made note that what he put together was 12 years ago so availability is a factor.
'48-'52 F-2 backing plates work on round-back spindles and stock Ford hubs (or Wilson Welding '46 new hubs) with a bit of machining capped with Buick 45 fin drums. I had not heard of that combination in all my years of playing with hotrods until 2010 when this setup was used on the front of my Deuce. That's all I've got to say. Good luck.
