Hey guys, I have been running a mallory YL series dual point ignition in my flat motor since 1992. Was bought new then. I recently picked up another last year at a swap meet. I am building a second motor. I try to put the distributor in an iron timing cover without the lower support and it bottoms out before you can clamp it. I put it in an aluminum merc cover with the lower support just like I'm running on my other motor and it wont fit in the upper hole! So I went and looked at the part numbers and the distributor in my running motor is the standard 2527501. The swap meet distributor is 2527502H. I havent found any information on this number. Obviously it is different. Anyone have the details on it? 20200517_150544.jpeg 20200517_150532.jpeg 20200517_143727.jpeg 20200517_143402.jpeg

In the third photo it looks like a radius ground on the end of the shaft would let the distributor drop far enough to rest on the clamp area. Grind it a bit and see if that does it.
You want some clearance so the gear is not pressing up on the distributor housing.

There is no support for the bottom of the distributor to keep the gears meshed. In the second cover.

Yup, I was going to do that but wanted to use an aluminum cover like I am using with the mallory on my other moyor. Then I hit a snag that this distributor wont fit in the aluminum cover. Never heard of such a thing!

I will be following this. My son started to install my rebuilt Mallory into my 53 Ford V8 with no luck. Said it was too big a diameter and too long. I’m not exactly sure what was wrong, but I’m at a point where I need to install it.

According to the 76 catalog, number difference only indicates a different advance curve. Couldn't find anything about the "H" at the end.

I have put a bunch of Mallory's into flatheads and have never seen this problem, (I usually like to use "flattops", though.) You don't suppose Speedway had a bunch of distributors made up that would only fit their proprietary timing cover. It is Speedway, after all.

Does anyone have the sketch of the distributor dimensions used to convert a sbc distributor to flathead? I cant seem to find it now. I would like to see how it matches up to what I have

Ok... little time with some sand paper on the ID of the cover and it starting going in... just a tight fit I guess! Still need to figure out what the 02H curve is though

So, I sent mallory a tech support to find more info on this distributor and had no luck.
mallory had a list of common curves on their old/new part number scheme that 24riverview posted earlier. I have seen that sheet before but I haven't ever seen a breakdown of what the curves are?? anyone know??
