  4. Here another pic of the fire burnout. Union Grove track photographer Pete Ores snapped this one. Geoff was standing to Pete's right side. I like the way the flames are coming out of the wheel wel. 20130623_154119.jpg

Great looking Mopars seem to be coming out of the woodwork. Didn't realize there were this many still around.

  22. My best friend and neighbor, Wes Elliott, had a '63 post just like this back in '67-71. It had been a Kansas Highway Patrol cruiser with a 383/Torqueflite, 2.87 rear gears and radio delete. He got it up to 140 (160?) mph on the interstate one night when simultaneously the glove compartment door fell open, the hood began to unlatch to the safety catch and the roof fluttered. Scared the hell out of both of us. Later he put on torquethrusts, two four-barrels, NASCAR banana headers and the whole exhaust system and dumps and went racing with it on weekends.

It is still in business in Signal Hill (as well as two other locations in So Cal) and is one of the top Dodge dealers in California.

    Hello,

Before the massive auto dealers moved to the outskirts of Long Beach near Signal Hill, they had a grouping of buildings in downtown Long Beach. (since 1921 on Anaheim Street) If they were not on the main drag called American Avenue and then changed to Long Beach Boulevard, they were very close by this area. We supported the local Chevrolet dealer and Buick dealer near our high school. But, if a Dodge/Plymouth was in the picture, one ventured to Glenn E. Thomas dealership on Anaheim St. It was the only Dodge/Plymouth dealer in town.

As far as drag racing and cruising, the Chevy sedans from the 50s ruled the streets. Then the big motor Fords and the 409 Chevy sedans came into the scene and it changed the whole cruising/racing scene in So Cal. The odd thing was, there weren’t too many big motor Fords or Chevy sedans cruising. They seemed to be in the top classes of the drag racing locales in So Cal. The most popular cruising hot rods were the somewhat modified 55-60 Chevy sedans. As most things go, the advance of factory competition played big time at the drags with full support in most brands.

For some reason, the hot Dodge/Plymouth sedans were doing some winning at the dragstrip, but did not play out to being so popular on the street scene during out cruising hot rod days. If anyone went to the drags, they were very popular and they were all over the pits area getting prepped for the competition that was to come that day.

By the time the Glenn E. Thomas Dodge/Plymouth dealership moved to the Signal Hill location, those cars were in the thick of things at the dragstrips all over So Cal. In Long Beach, everyone knew where to go to get their version of those hot Dodge and Plymouth sedans. This was the Super Stock class, not the altered wheelbase cars, that was for a different classification of racing.

Factory literature from 1962–1964 states "the 413/426 Max Wedge was “available in any Dodge or Plymouth B-Body except taxi and station wagon” applications. Several factory-built 1962 and 1963 four-doors have been verified, though the factory lightweight package (sales code 709) was restricted to two-door sedans after March 1963."
