I added to my number this afternoon, I painted a small letter Q over the 4. First one to get it gets a cookie! Hahaha!

Can you imagine how many of those Subtle Nonsenses were painted out on Hotrods/Customs over the years...

There's a Chevy Survivor Coupe Austinrod just posted that was Striped by Dean Jeffries way back in the 50s and there was a Lady Lets Say...in a wild pose in his striping and it was changed out actually at some point due to well...a 4 q moment that I guess didn't go over well...

Rusty you have an Artistic Hand...You should draw the Ole Id'l do and get it in the Art Show 4 q and All...

Been thinking of a small windscreen so I made one out of sheet metal to see if I like the looks of it. At this point I think it might be a tad to tall.
Thoughts?

 

A letter with your racing number years ago normally designated the state you were from as you moved around the country to various state race tracks..I’ll be keeping my eye out for a Q state as I travel the country. Pennsylvania comes to mind.....

 

I did not know that. Around here it was usually the drivers first initial from there last name. I did it just for a tongue in cheek F U, so far not to many folks have got it.

 

I was on the fence about the windscreen but as you can tell it’s on the car!

So does the old Mopar flathead six have enough ummph to mobilize your pile o parts in a brisk manner? Do you know how much it weighs?? The power to weight ratio must be pretty good.

It does pretty good. I used a 1940 dodge pickup top loader three speed. First is non synchro and very low. I have been starting in second so I only have to shift once. I haven't dumped the clutch on a start yet but have got into the throttle after it gets moving and it pulls nicely. I've had it up to 62 mph(GPS speedo on my phone) and the motor is starting to hum pretty good. At 62 the front tires started to do the death bounce. I have to buy an adapter to bolt to my wide five wheels so I can get then balanced, I'm hoping that will do the trick. All in all I'd be happy if I could drive it 65 mph for short jaunts. It's really fun to drive around the 55mph mark.
Oh and no I don't know what it weighs yet. I know a person at a business that weighs semi truck loads so I'll have to run it down there soon.

 

Curious about the "proverbial bump steer" subject. Have you experience any in your limited driving?

 

Nope not once has is had bump steer. I live in the black hills on a steep winding road with tight curves and a few longer straight stretches (every time I go for a ride I have my very own personal hotrod hill climb on the way home)and I've never experienced any funny steering issues. I'm hoping after I balance the wheels I get rid of the hi speed bounce.

 

Wonder how many places would know how to set up for the wide five wheel? Perhaps you know someone that has the older machine that balances them on the vehicle? Worst case you could try balancing beads I suppose.

 

Last Friday I took it to an old school truck shop to spin balance the wheels, get it in the shop spin the tires and the strobe light that detects the outa balance quits working. So I just decided I'll buy a wide five adapter from speedway and balance them on a new machine.

 

I Ran down and weighed the car today at a business that makes landscaping bark. I went to school with the gal in the scale house and she said if you ever want to weigh your hotrods come on down so I took her up on it. The scale was bouncing between #1480 and #1500 it was super windy out so I don’t know if that was making it do that.
I was super surprised I figured it was going to be around #2000 since the motor is really heavy.

 

Yep, haha, if an aluminum bellhousing were available the car would weigh 1400 flat.

 

If you can get a return visit, weigh just the front, then just the rear too.
I don't know about the laws in SD, but I'd make sure to get a scale slip with 1500# or less on it just in case you get pulled over. Fenderless was often done with a weight limit, and that should prove you are under it. Always better to have ammo and not need it...

Yeah I don’t have to worry about that. I only went down and weighed it because I was curious.

 

I havent done much with the car besides break it and fix it.
My daughter races go carts at a local circle track. I asked the track prep guys if I could come up and help pack track and the answer was a big yes. I figured I was going to get muddy so I bought a pair of Dickies coveralls. I found an old Texaco patch on eBay and had my wife’s grandfathers service station embroidered on the back. Should he fun to go out and get muddy!

Dang, Rusty. Somehow I'm just not getting notices when you add to this. That's OK, though, because I get to sit down and read 3 or 4 pages at a time. It's cool that you're blasting around in it now. Did you ever get the tires balanced? I'll second Stogy's recommendation on the beads. I used them in all four tires of mine, and it's still running smooth when I chicken out around 70. Cruises along real nice at 60ish. Anyway, congratulations. It's quite a machine.

 

I did get the fronts balanced. When we put then on the balancer you could see they were out or round(sure wish we had a tire shaver in my neck of the woods) . Took it out on the interstate Saturday doing around sixty somewhat comfortably but just a few miles an hour faster and I could tell it was going to start hopping around. So I guess 60 is going to be top speed.
