So, about a 18 months ago we decided we needed a roadster. We started the proverbial search of all the usual websites. After looking at thousands of cookie cutter cars, the wife stumbled on to a CL ad that was somewhat vague. 1929 Ford roadster magazine car. That piqued my interest so we started looking at the pics. They weren't great pics and the description was crap. But, it had the look I was after and it was in my price range.

I started trying to contact the buyer but it didn't have a phone number, just one of the crappy contact the seller functions that CL has. I kept sending messages but no answer. The car was in St. Louis, MO. I have a buddy that lives up there (CVSTL here on the hamb) , so I called him and asked him if he could figure out where this cat was.

He started messaging him, as I had tried, but the difference was his place of business was just around the corner from the guys house. Clay had looked at that goofy little map deal on CL and figured it out. He told the guy he was just around the corner and had a trailer and cash. That got him to at least respond. We had to set the hook, so Clay went the next day to investigate. He told me he would front the money if it was a deal and then I could bring my trailer and we would do the exchange.

Long story longer, Clay buys the car for me and calls me. Clay says "I bought the car on one condition, I get to drive the car to the Midwest Roadster Run next week." I told him, technically he was the owner, so absolutely. Clay shook the car down and it fixed a few things. We did the swap a few weeks later and I have been driving the car since last Sept.

The car was originally from the STL area and has a great story. I'll let HOT ROD magazine tell the story. It's in this link. I'll post pics of the car from the article.

    Article.

It's a little more worn now and I plan on a freshen up for it this winter. I was going to do it last winter, but I kept driving it on the nice days. The car is a ton of fun. My wife just loves the car. We have put a ton of miles on it. It needs some attention, but it's nothing major. Just a few mechanical things I would like to address.

I had planned on waiting for the freshening up to take pics, but I guess I can add them later.

Thanks to my buddy Clay Vance for facilitating the sale. He hated to let it go, but his wife wanted a bathroom renovation more than another hot rod.

    Bitchin' man.

Whats interesting is being a Midwest car it has a touch of East Coast channel to it.
Both coasts had influence in builds back then.

This is a neat East vs West comparison article.

I am doing a few things to it. The paint is actually DP90 and is about 20 years old. It's flat now and has a hard time with water. It spots like crazy. I plan on a respray, as is. No bodywork, just scuff and spray with a single stage black. I am going to pinstripe the outlines of the doors in white etc. Period correct. Tastefully. The interior is pretty bad. Pretty sure the guy's wife did it. It's a 70's harvest gold. Thinking of a white vinyl.

Second gear is out, so I need to pull the motor over the winter and fix that. I'll reseal the rear main and clean up any other obvious leaks. I also scored a set of NOS Cal Custom staggered valve covers, in the original box. I'll throw those on too.
