so I’m converting my ‘50 deluxe to 12v. But I’ve seen people do it different ways. Somebody only swapped the gen. out, while some guy re-wired and added a bulb that would light if the alt was charging.
So far I’ve purchased an alt., 12v starter solenoid, 12v coil, some wire and connectors and lights of course.
Not sure what all needs done or what’s just extra.

I'd be tempted to replace all the seventy year old wiring, rewiring the car completely.

Vintage auto garage has a great package. Their voltage reducer is really straight forward.

Check out Chevy Talk 1949-1952 under the sticker post section. There is a great step by step guide for conversion. Also you tube “Eric’s Project”. Eric has a 51 Chevy that he shows exactly what he did (bulbs, light, etc.) to convert his daily driver to 12v. I’ll be converting my 51 deluxe with in the next couple of months. Good luck.

Got her wired but now she doesn’t wanna fire. Read somewhere that the wires to the coil get swapped, neg-pos vice versa

Ya now you are running a negative earth you will need to sway the pos and neg leads over on the coil for a start though I think you may have other problems why it is not firing up.

Problems such as? Ran fine prior to this. I’m gonna check spark tonight but otherwise can’t think of a reason she won’t fire.

When I have seen coils wired up in reverse the engine has still started but not run right. Did make me wonder if you are getting power to the coil. Hopefully I am wrong and changing the leads over cures the problem.

Your Chevy was originally 6v Negative ground, right? And you converted to 12v Negative ground. No need to swap the coil wires...

    No, 6v positive ground.
Currently my coil is + to starter solenoid, - to distributor.
I could run a wire straight to the battery Incase of an improper power issue

  13. Did you change out your 6v condenser with a 12v?

No. It wasn’t a listed piece to swap. At least not on guided I red

  15. These cars were originally negative ground.

No clue then. When I got mine, the + was grounded to the engine block and she ran fine.

  17. I'm getting in late on this but I'm assuming you're running the inline six?

Ya sorry. Straight 6, 3 on the tree. 1950 Chevy deluxe. All original.
I swapped the battery, coil, alt, starter solenoid and bulbs. Wire from the starter to the + of the coil, wire from the distributor to the - of the coil. Bypassed the thinner wire from the generator and tied the 2 power wires together from the regulator on the firewall. Ran the red wire from the DA alt plug to the stud on the alt (along with the bigger power wire that was connected to the distributor), then ran the white DA wire to my starter button (top terminal of the 2 available)

Wire from ignition switch to coil +? Ignition primary resistor? How about a quick and dirty schematic of all your changes.

The condenser doesn't care if its a 6v or 12v system.

  23. do you have an alternator "DA" plug? (plugs into the back of the alt., with a ring terminal to the "batt" post on the alternator) You will need one to keep current from running the car even after you've turn off the ignition

Just to clarify, looking at your drawing does your coil have Positive power going to it even when the ignition is off.

Asked the same question earlier. Not mentioned as the only wire is from the starter to the coil. Also no igntion resistor, but does have the bypass wire from the starter, assuming that that on is on the starter side of the solenoid, not the battery.

The wire goes from the starter solenoid to the + on the coil. I do not have a separate wire coming off the battery for constant power.
Also no resistor on the ignition.

If there is no resistor in the circuit this is how the coil should be wire up. So that the coil only gets power when the ignition is turned on. Looking at your drawing it appears that the coil is powered up all the time. If this is the case then the coil would be burnt out.

So having the coil wired hot through the starter solenoid leaves power going to it constantly?
