I put an ad in the Spokane Craigslist and a Gentleman Just sent me pictures of this 603569363.jpg 603569391.jpg 603569415.jpg Volvo transmission, I'm thinking it's not the right one but I don't know what it is. Any Volvo experts on here?

I really dig this car. The wire wheels don't work for me personally but I like the engineering. Very nice. I would have stuck with the Model A wheels myself. Look forward to more updates.

Qualifying my position, I am not an expert, but I have done some research and found a few for my own use.
I missed this, for some reason I have not had the email about new posts until today. That is not the M40 trans although it looks very similar, I think it is probably an Amazon M30 three speed . They had the M40 as an option in Amazon though, I do not know if it is as strong, but if the dimensions are the same as the M40 it would at least give you a synchro box , which you could swap out at a later date.
    The M40 , was in 140 series , 1.e 142, 144 etc , the 1975 240s and in P1800 sports cars.

Post 175 the 200 series had another upgrade M45 and M46 overdrive.

Well after a bunch of head scratching I decided to stick with the T5, I had a guy in Utah who was going to give me volvo trans but when he weighed it it was over 50 lbs, not really dainty....

The overdive won the argument and it should be very reliable at this power level.

A good friend of mine John Ulhorn gave me a 40's rearend that had been sitting in his pasture for God knows how many years and I got to tearing it apart. The brake shoes were frozen to the drums proved to be quite a workout, ending in butchery with the gas axe.

The rear end has obviously sat with water in it for years and years but amazingly enough the parts I needed for this project were okay.

I decided to go a different direction than the included U-joints as they required some odd machine work to make the 3/4 ton spider gears work in the model A housing. At first I was going to make some tapered hubs similar to what you would find on the end of the axle to connect to. I got most of the machine work done and was trying to figure out how I was going to cut a keyway in the outside taper at an angle, after some head scratching I decided it was mostly above my paygrade. 20200331_093602.jpg
So I begged Another axle from a friend and ordered up some split tapered tubs like would be used in industrial air compressors. This way I only had to machine a keyway on the axle. Machined the axle down to 1 1/8 in, leaving enough material so hubs had to be lapped on for the final fit.
    20200415_164102.jpg

And of course Henry had to leave his mark but luckily not where the seal is going to ride 20200415_165136.jpg

Next up I needed some support for where the axles exits the Magnesium Bells, I sourced bearings that pressed into the Bells but much too large for the axle itself.

To make up the slack required a machine bushing from a vintage cannon barrel....

I picked up a 3.54 ratio gear set from Speedy bill, I found after installing the new side bearings that the back of the gear was rubbing on the side bell. I used magic marker to locate whereit was rubbing and ground it out with my finger sander. 20200416_150824.jpg 20200416_100257.jpg 20200416_152352.jpg 20200416_144242.jpg

With the fab work done it was time to start setting it up, I've rebuilt a ton of conventional differentials but this is a whole nother bird. Digging through websites I kind of got the gist of how go about it. First step was building a tool to turn the carrier through the side plates. I used a piece of 3/4 d steering shaft and an old Chinese spark plug socket. This tool goes in place of spider gear assembly during setup allowing you to check the rotational torque of the carrier bearings. 20200416_095309.jpg 20200416_100257.jpg

Then I cleaned and de-bured the mating surfaces. 20200416_101148.jpg

On the first try of assembly I found that without any gaskets on the side plates I had a little more than .080" slop, so I made a puller to pull the carrier bearings and added in shims under them to space the bearings out. It took some trial and error but eventually I got it set to where I had a fair amount of side cover gaskets needed to get the correct rotational torque . This allows for backlash adjustment by moving gaskets from one side to the other. 20200506_141240.jpg 20200507_135237.jpg 20200506_095126.jpg

So someone who should have known better stacked up the pinion bearing and pressed the whole shooting match on, that was an $80 lesson... don't do that!
    20200422_093755.jpg

So after calling Mac's and waiting for a new pinion set i cut a piece of 1.5" tubing and pressed the bearings on 1 at a time.
    20200505_162235.jpg
Your supposed to use a bearing intaller that pulls on the torque tube bolts to push the pinion bearing race into the housing, to improvise i cut a plate that bolted to the same flange and used the previously ruined race on the press to push it in. I forgot to get an action shot of this so you will have to use your imagination.
    20200506_155044.jpg

    20200506_161327.jpg

I used the open drive conversion yoke as an assembly fixture to set the pinion bearing preload to 20 inch pounds (yeah I know continuity problem)
    20200505_163918.jpg

After pressing in the pinion i rechecked the rotational torque and verified 20 inch pounds.

After some trial and error have moving the gasket side-to-side I got a backlash that I was happy with and a gear pattern that is acceptable. Next I installed the stub shafts and spider gears then installed the seal housings with a bit of ultra black sealant. Then the housing was off for a couple glamor shots. 20200506_162952.jpg

Bonneville was pretty hard on the car as I had taken so much time off the shop in oreder get it ready to go last year that when I got back I had to dive into work and it just got put away. The car will be coming apart completely for paint and reassembly. 20200424_085244.jpg 20200424_085919.jpg 20200424_103103.jpg

I realise I am a year late (and probably a dollar short:D) but I went back through to read the entire thread again . This came up on the Banger Meet thread this week. If a mag is out of the question for you ,perhaps the magneto drive could be used for your distributor. It mounts in place of the cam (timing) gear cover on the side of the block.

Thats a 3 inch open tube rear end ,with disc brake for a sprint car, no differential just a one piece tube.

I'm doing an IRS, the unsprung weight ratio is fucking horrendous, drives great on smooth pavement but if you hit a bump it shoves your kidneys out through your ears.

It will have to be our little secret but in conjunction with a Sprint car adapter plate I'm using Dodge Caravan front wheel drive parts............ oh and the kids are hanging out at the shop since the schools have been shut.

I drew up some flanges and had our local water jet Guy cut them
    20200430_135902.jpg

Trimmed and squared up on the lathe just the spline section of the CV axle. Then pressed on the flange and tig welded them together. Using euro parts too:oops: for the joint. Then sourced some 2.5" 6061 T6 for the half shafts.
