    love that car!
wonder where it is now, if it still exists..
I dig both versions here, earlier with gold wheels and eight carbs,
and later with Halibrands, wires, no front brakes and dual carbs.

  3. It is so good man!!

Since you asked about the Gene Chan car, here is an "updated" version from April 1977 1001 Custom and Rod Ideas with a new owner. That was some time ago, so anything could have happened. Scan-200430-0001.jpg

that's quite a change, must say I prefer the earlier versions
the seventies were not kind to it

Once the taller windshield and top were added, it drastically changed it. Also added T headlights, doesn’t look as tough.

    'nuther little update

countersunk the steering box mounting bolts (screws) to clear the steering arm
heat and bend arm to clear things
marked location of arm at full lock right, arm near vertical at straight ahead position
pieced together a drag link (temporary) to check fit and action
tire hits drag link turning left, expected but should give adequate turning radius
full turn to right is a little sharper, also expected.
interesting though that full turn either way is only about half way to full lock

lines indicate full turn right and left
outline of arm is full lock right
    (Last picture)

so many changes it hardly looks like the same car.
only thing that for sure is the same is the turtle deck.

love the youthful exuberance of the owner in the color photos
it's every bit as appealing as the car itself

I am loving every part of this build. For some reason the gold engine really speaks to me.

This is a great build, you come up with some really neat ideas. That Olds is looking all business in there!

    thanks!

    steering continued:
I cut down the F100 shaft and grafted on the top of a mid '60s Chevy shaft.
missed photo op but I cut the two shafts
    and tig welded them together,
slid a nice tight fitting sleeve over the splice
and tig welded it up too.
    bolted the box back in
measured and cut the mid '60s C10 jacket to fit between the '50s F100 box and '62 Olds wheel.
the Ford box took a much smaller diameter jacket than the Chevy
so cut a couple pieces of tube to fit together to make a simple sleeve adapter
and put the wheel in place to check fit and appearance.
I need to break the tacks at the box mount and rotate it a couple degrees
but I do believe this is pretty close to what I had in mind.

    oh yeah,
    started reworking the grill shell
the fill hole was an unfinished rough patch
so I knocked it roughly in shape
made a pattern, cut a new patch,
welded it in and cleaned it up a little.
still some work to do there too, but it's already looking like something

    lazy Sunday afternoon,
    worked on the grill shell
cut out the weld from the early chop job
    separating the top and bottom.
weld the top and bottom back together,
    and bump it into shape..

fine tuned the steering wheel location,
a little tip up, rotate clockwise a couple degrees, and slide the box back a touch..

    I actually fit
good thing I got long arms and short legs..

    That's a rare early 32 grille shell.

One single round-ish crank hole in the bottom. Switched to three holes soon after production started. One for the crank and two others on the side I think for drainage.

Please do not wait until things get done. It's really nice to see how you are fabricating everything.
Proportions look great, as does the fabrication. And the gold Olds

That steering wheel set up is just too slick. I love it.
