Hi. Did you check the ring & pinion gears and their inner bearings?

Does the sound change from under power to coast?

  12. Sometimes they sound like you're running a load of rocks and Coke bottles thru a washing machine. Occasionally followed by a loud "ker-CHUNK-eta" sound. :(

The sound depends on what's going bad in it. Bearings can make noise, or they can get loose and let the ring and pinion make noise, or gear teeth can break off, or side gear splines can strip, or spider gears can get loose, or the cross pin can fall out, or the pinion nut can back off, or a bearing race can eat into the housing, or....

there is no single answer to your question. If you want to know what's going on, you have to get in there and look at stuff.

You only want to hear the sound of the exhaust, tunes or a blower whining.

The chrome worm on the cover was from a bolt taking a ride in a (now) 9 bolt posi. Ring gear spacers suck.
    Bruce, sorry for the hijack

Check to see if there is metal in the lube.
If its a slow failure, it will appear pearlescent cause the gears have been grinding it fine.
