So I’m watching Herbie “the Love Bug” with the kids. Obviously it is silly but there are more race scenes with old cars than I remember. (Corvettes, cobras and even what looks like one of the grand sport corvettes I think. Plus they mentioned Bakersfield Ca and show racing in what looks like Kern County. One car in particular caught my eye when they are suppose to be racing in Mexico. It sure looks like the happy days roadster pickup a few years before the show aired. Adjustments.JPG

    Hello,
That was one tough one to sketch and draw. Those headers and motor were restructured many times, to get as close to the original as possible. The flames, well there is an artistic perspective to drawing flames...similar but different.

For the times, it was a cool RPU. When we saw it in those silly comedies and TV shows, we thought it was cool to see. We wished we had one to drive around.

The RPU has changed in various forms and looks during those ancient TV shows. That is Hollywood during those early days. No one noticed that much back then.

    Some more shots...
For the guys just getting into Traditional Hot Rods and are kicking around the idea of a Flat Head , of the Ford V8 variety, make note that this is "NOT" the way to install "Functional" headers on one.... 1576042076274641450691402074757.jpeg 1576041997912534220713932595774.jpeg 15760420166365994861886663976886.jpeg

Other than those screwy headers bolted above the real ones and that unusual scoop it's not a bad little rod!
Has anyone ever owned up to being the original builder?
Any idea where it was from?

  13. Well, nobody asked you. Other than the items added on for the TV show, it actually appears to be a well built little hotrod. Really surprised that no one has any history on it before it went all Hollywood.

I would guess that was probably a idea that came from the upstairs studio brass....tv and movie cars were sometimes crude in there construction while under contract.

  17. Just once I’d like to see a movie or show where they got the car related stuff absolutely correct. Especially using a torch. It’s not going to happen. These guys might try getting a job as automotive consultant and fact checker.

They do better with fire arms but still.....

Building things (any thing purposeful for the shot) for movies is about FAKING it for the camera.
Now when you’re the guy who the producers and director tell “I want chrome headers on the car for the shot tomorrow” You’re gonna do your job... maybe say it’s a flat head with 3 ports and it’s going to take me a week to make some that look right and get chromed and that work right plus it’s going to be too loud.

This thing thats going around now is really bringing out the "fakes" and made for tv in the human side of movie and tv land also.. ....with alot of these stars that are stuck at home, in there mansion's, with out there "people" to prep them ...they look like crap...apparently some of them can't even do there own hair and makeup or dress them selves even..
Hell I guess if you don't have to...and you get rich even if your home looking like crap...then go for it...
Shit..occasionally I may look a little unkempt and it doesn't matter if I'm stuck at home or out and around....but I'm not getting rich either way...but I do cut my own hair..
With the same clippers that I use too shave with...one tool , two jobs and I'm still ugly and poor.

ahahahah..mmm...did you look at the picture's that are posted of the engine?
Count the exhaust ports on the flathead....
    Yes it's a V8...
As mentioned the headers are for a sbc ...and they have how many exhaust ports, on one side, ?
Take a look at how they are mounted, at the port flanges..
    What do you think?
I'm sure the flathead sounds pretty good....
    No thanks to the headers.....
They are fake....well the headers are real headers, for a sbc, but they are fudged onto the Ford V8 just for looks...they are non functional...its about the port count.
Just screwing with ya...probably nothing to do with your question...or is it?

no the question was about sound, not the fake headers. you know hollywood, like when they put a harley sound track on for a 350 honda taking off

Ok ...I always liked the continuous gear shifting sounds for a car that was actually a automatic.

this could be one of the earliest known "hold my beer" events, if the builder had a bunch of his buddy's over and the clown in the bunch said, hold my beer as he grabbed a header off the wall and held it up to the motor...the rest is history
