This is my first time rebuilding a project so go easy on me. I just picked up this 383 crate motor from a family friend that had passed. It was never used, however I'm stumped as to what this connector is coming out of towards the rear of the block. It's in the block above the transmission next to the air intake manifold. (I'm about to feel rather dense, I can feel it coming) but any help would be appreciated.

Don’t feel dense. It’s always better to ask questions.

  7. As above, for an electric pressure gauge vs warning light.

Yep, it is one for a gauge. Looks to be for an 80 lb gauge. Did he by chance have 66/81 Chev that the engine was intended for?

Your sending unit appears to have thread sealing compound on the fittings.
That can inhibit a proper ground and cause your pressure gauge to malfunction.

  10. Odds are real good that one didn't come with the Motor. I believe they come with a plug in the hole, you install the sender correct for your vehicle. Looks like after market sender.

use of Teflon tape will mess up your ground.
Just a Couple wraps on tapered threads won’t

Since you don't know the history of this engine, you don't know what gauge is compatible with that sender. Since it is 1/8 NPT, it is easy to swap in a different sender.

Or vs a mechanical gauge. (Uses tube that sends oil pressure directly to the gauge ) You can swap out the sender and install a mechanical gauge. I think they are more (sorry about this >) "old school"/ traditional/ and in my opinion, reliable.

I would tell you that it's an oil sending unit but others have already said it is an oil sending unit.
