Hot Rods 29 RPU- "Street/Strip" B/SR Build - Marty Strode

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Marty Strode, Dec 19, 2019.

  1. Take a break, celebrate his life and influence on you, reminisce with friends and then get back to what you do so well. Your brother wouldn't want to hold you back for long. RIP Jerry.

Thanks for all of the condolences, much appreciated. The exhaust parts I ordered for the 29 and Track Roadster, showed up today, now I can work on both. The headers for the RPU will be the street setup, 1-5/8" primary pipes, stepped up to 1-3/4" to a 3-1/2" collector. The competition set will come later and be 1-3/4, stepped to 1-7/8. 34 years ago, when I restored the Bizio Truck, I hadn't started building headers yet, so Jerry came and bailed me out, as always. Thanks for the outpouring of good thoughts. This shot exemplifies his life, great family man, teaching his kids how to get the job done. After a wild thrash, shaking down his latest creation, before paint. His oldest Son Lonny, 2nd from left, was Funny Car and Top Fuel racer Gary Clapshaw's Crew Chief and served as Tuner most of the time. He was the one in charge, at the Nationals when Garlits came out of retirement, driving Gary's car, and ran in the 4's @ over 300 for the first time ! IMG_4711.JPG

I started on the mock up of the street headers, checking the flanges for flatness, and prepping the surfaces. An old friend, Dennis Murray, builds Superbike exhaust systems, gave me 2 huge boxes of pre-bent pipe. It will come in handy for the 1-5/8 primary pipes. There's no better way to honour your brother than to carry on and build a fine set of headers! Sorry for your loss.

Got started making pipes last night, both front pipes are welded, and tacked in place. Now the creative aspect comes into play. I shortened the collectors from Speedway, they are as nice as any I have ever used. IMG_4726.JPG IMG_4727.JPG IMG_4729.JPG IMG_4730.JPG [/ATTACH] IMG_4732.JPG IMG_4733.JPG IMG_4734.JPG

Back on the headers today. The first 4 pics, illustrate how I solved the problem of holding and tack welding the joints. Tacking with a tig can be difficult while trying to hold the sections together tightly. About 20 years ago I devised the method shown, it doesn't work in all applications, but it gets rid of much frustration. One more pipe to fit, after lunch, and then I can mark and cut the pieces for the other side. Somehow, the last pipe always takes longer. IMG_4778.JPG IMG_4781.JPG

I like your hose clamp alignment tack weld device!
On the collectors, did you block
off the center of the union with a square(ish) plug or make a cone?

So Marty, forgive my ignorance here, but it looks like the primary tubes start as 1 5/8" but then are joined to larger tubes, 1 3/4"? I've been looking for a set of headers very similar to that design but angled down a little more, inspired by the hot rod in the Giant Gila Monster movie. Haven't found any yet, and may have to build my own. If I go that route this will be very helpful. I'll be watching, thanks!

Very sorry to hear about your brother Marty. Very few people in this world have the vision, talent, speed and follow through to do the things he did. He was special indeed, may he Rest In Peace. Obviously a lot of those attributes rubbed off on you, keep up the good work and think of him when you’re enjoying your RPU.
