Working on a 1940 ford Sedan project I picked up that was in pieces. The previous owner had started on the suspensions and used what looks like a Chassis Engineering rear leaf spring set up. The problem is I didn't get the rear shocks with the rest of the parts. Best I can tell I need a shock that is about 9.5 compressed to 14 1/2 full length with 5/8 eye mounts on either end. I think the top mount could use a 1/2 possibly. I know if I go the local parts store they are just going want to look it up on their computer and as soon as I tell them it is for a 40 ford. They will say sorry they cant go back that far. So any one out there have a 40 sedan that might be able to tell me what they used with this type of rear suspension set up? Thanks, tracer55
I used a pair of 1989-1997 Ford AeroStar rear shocks Gabriel Guardian rears P/N 81727 from Auto Zone here in Nj $21.00 each for ther rear of my 1940 Ford Coupe with CE springs and upper shock Mount
Your numbers are correct and you can buy the rear shocks from CE, TCI, P&J, Ride Tech, etc. The upper bolts used in the TCI shocks are 7/16. Your local NAPA has a chart that can provide you with the shocks. Just tell them the dimensions you require. I use the new Ride Tech from TCI and they work great.
At one time, I believe they used early fifties Chevrolet pickup shocks. Could be wrong though. Thanks for the current part number and OEM application.
I am dealing with the same issues. CE springs and shock perches and no shocks on my 40 standard. 14in at ride height, 2.5 in to bump stop. Did you find shocks?
I have a similar CE set up on my 41 truck and ordered Bilstein gas shocks for the rear with those similar dimensions. I have them on my 34 as well. not cheap but very nice ride.
