"Truck driver who operates between Twin Cities and radius of 150 miles" With no door? Minneapolis '39 ~
Folks looking at this thread brings back so many wonderful memories for me that sometimes I wish I could go back and do it all over again. I understand time marches on but growing up in the 50's and 60's era was really fun and hard at the same time if you know what I mean. No one really had much money but we all had big dreams to help us get through those times. Special Thanks to everyone who finds these great photo's and reminds us of where we came from. This is with out any dough my favorite thread on the HAMB Jimbo
Vermont. 1 brattleboro hogsback , 2 bennington where walmart rotary is. i tripped the fire alarm on door in '73 as a kid to my ma's chagrin in the first national(shiny and so red). Bought my bench rifle in the mobil, when charlie wells ran a gun shop in it. 3rd is hazy to me, but cool pic. 4th is ticonderoga being hauled up to shelburne museum. 5th catamount is vermont speak for a mountain lion
more vermont... 1st is ad for 59? fords. white river jct. (in 1963 vermont outlawed billboards). second is rt 2 chain of islands on northern part of champlain. the next ones i don't know loc. ice floes, mud season and random interstate construction (maybe). that bowl grader trailer is there for some serious work.
various mass/ny pics. mostly series of pics, out of order a bit. i like the bull bar on the chevy wrecker in 2d photo. the truck that wrecked was headed out of the ford plant in Mahwah NJ as was the trucking company. wrecked upstate ny. no idea where. anything north of westchester is considered upstate.
The first photo looks like Bob Sweikert in an early sprint car ride. Could this be at Oakland? And my eyes are a little off this morning but this one looks to be a young Bill Vukovich in the midget. Am I correct or am I dreaming? And I think you started with Sweikert and you ended up Sweikert today. This is Bob in the Zink Championship car which was one of the first dirt cars built by Watson. It might even have been his first. Thanks, Rootie!
You're right that is Sweikert at Oakland in Karl Orr's car that appears to be fresh out of the oven. Here's a shot of the car with paint and Bayliss Leverett up at Baylands. I don't have a name on the midget driver but it's not Vukey. This fellow was a lesser known driver who raced in the Ill./Ind. area. Interestingly the rr wheel appears to have a beadlock on it, which I recall as coming about in the 70s.
I was reading your post about Vermont when I saw the photo of the bill boards and then I read the part about Vermont outlawing bill boards in 1963 I know that I never saw any bill boards when I was up there and I believe that back in those day's you could have any sign you wanted on a business or anything else as long as it was either a white background with black lettering or a black background with white lettering and that was it! I know Vermont was talking about putting the entire state on the National Historic Registry at one point as a way of stopping Walmart from coming into the state and building large block buildings and I was wonder if they ever did it?
