I have a starter bendix that I believe it not returning after starting. It engages just fine but makes a rather nasty sound after until I blip the throttle and that seems to send it back. Any ideas why this could happen? I have broken springs before but that only lead to non engagement of teeth.

You need take the starter out, check that the drive is clean and not sticking on return. Always best to bench test it to see what is happening.

Could be sticking or catching. Happens to alot of starters.

  4. Slight misalignment do to not having the small bracket from oil pan to starter?

I have the small bracket on it. I will take it out and see if it’s gummed up or something.

most folks are tempted to oil or grease the shaft, but it should be clean and dry to not attract dirt
