Hot Rods Mounting the battery in your early hot rod

Got a 925 mounted under my seat along with a small Battery tender. When not drivin every day I just plug the tender in. Problem solved.

I hid mine in plain sight. Easy to service too.

 

I didn’t hide mine in the 47 Linc, it sits in the factory battery tray on the right side corner of the firewall and fender. I feel it balances the look of the engine compartment what with the power brake booster and master cylinder on the left side corner of the firewall. Easy to get to, too.

Mine is in a plastic box in the trunk. Don’t like it there, takes up too much room. But haven’t yet figured out where to move it to.

In the trunk area, use welding cables for great power transfer, & use a sealed battery.

Looking at what's in the background of the first pic, I wonder where you got the idea for the overall shape, the hold-down bar, and the hook bolts

 

Couldn't fit a big battery there on mine so it went under the deck (Optima)

 

Haha Yeah Ned I think your right ,,never thought of that ,but subconsciously definitely!,,,,although I haven’t opened the bonnet (hood) on the Lolite in 2 years,,

 

In my 36 Willy's w/4cyl. under the hood. I need ease of access more than looks.

In my deuce coupe i usede an old delco starter pack and mounted it in the trunk.

 

Gonna be a true running board battery box for me ,on my model T

On the firewall. I’m lazy and didn’t want to have to crawl under the truck if it needs servicing.

I made a box and put it behind my seat, in the trunk area. One side is for the battery and one is for tools and stuff. There's plenty of gaps in the car; I'm not worried about fumes.

what about routing the vent pipes out through the floor?

 

Where that becomes a problem at least with a standard battery is venting. Hydrogen even in an open car can be a problem.

In a sedan with no truck I have been known to mount the battery under the back seat (like a beetle), if the vehicle has a turtle deck or a truck box that is a natural place for a battery.

When I have a battery in the cab I like to put it in an enclosed box vented to the outside of the vehicle. Paranoid? you bet your ass but you know what they say, "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they are not out to get ya."

I guess even as a teen in the 1950s,I didn't think battery was pretty,so hiding it under seat seemed best. Being my hot rod no longer had a trunk to hide in,and firewall mount seemed the most ugly place of all. Bat has been same place I put it in 1959,but I did replace my first box,with a little bit bigger one for a little bigger bat.
When my son Lance an I built him a T-bucket,he liked the idea of having it in same place as my old 28A hot rod. So under the seat, in his case a alum hatch cover over the top of bat box. Here's a photo of Lance's "T" going together with seat bottom up .

I have a small Braille battery which I stuck up on top of the rear fender well in my roadster. With the gas tank in there and the floor hump to clear the spring there isn't much room for anything and I didn't want to loose more space to the battery. It's a small battery but good cranking power. Hung a kill switch on the side of the mount as well. I may move that to someplace outside the car as it's a pain in the ass to remember it is off after you have gotten into the car!

 

Retired from 50 years in General Aviation two years ago. Found a discarded NiCad battery box and cable one day, took them home for future use. So here it will go in my coupe, complete with quick disconnect! Battery will mount inside and the box will be vented with fresh air in and bad air overboard in stainless lines!

 

Mounted in trunk at end of gas tank. Made two boxes in case battery didn't have enough juice to crank the 425. Boxes made to look like 50 cal ammo boxes, just a little larger. Never used the second one, used as spares and tools box. Battery is a type 51 used in a pile of Hondas.
