Now #21, the Kukura -Lindsley roadster on the trailer going to the 1959 Bonneville nationals. The car was "D" class in 58, now showing as "B" class. Can someone tell me the difference between D and B, as the rules were in 59?

...you are absolutely spot on correct Sliced, circa 1955...

Sure don't want any flat's at those speeds they were going...must have been tubeless already just as Stogy's reading the title...:)

Not sure but 58-59 might have been the year they reversed the engine cubic inch sizes. In the begining D was the largest and A the smallest. Then it became A and now AA with K the smallest now. This was also before the "X" classes. In the 50's it was inches against inches with a penalty for a blower. Streamliner, Lakester, Modified roadster, Comp coupe were fuel classes only when I started in 1975 so you could run what ever you wanted.

That would make sense, as I don't think anything major changed in the motor for 59. Current SCTA rule book says "B" is 373 to 439 cui. My 1951 rulebook says "D" was over 301 cui. Thanks, @jimmy six !

This might actually be Gary Cagle's "Half-Fast" T coupe. He entered it at one of the Bonneville trials but I don't think it passed inspection. He also ran it at the drags, with Don Hampton...Here is a fuzzy shot of it at Lions: cagle-hamptonmid-50s.jpg

A couple more of the #21 roadster. These show it on the salt, now without the engine classification. Not sure what year this was, but still before the big blower was added.

From what I have found, the #21 roadster ran a slower 172.41 at Bonneville in 1959. In 1960, I believe it had the blower on it, making more wicked. With I think Kukura driving, it spun out at 200 mph after the first timing trap, but didn't roll. He did not do a return run, and the car was retired after this 1960 meet.

The Kukura roadster as seen here (pic from the web) was kept by Jack until his death in 2005. The car auctioned in 2015 at Amelia Island for $151,800. Jack bought it in 1946 for $375.....

When flipping thru some of the documents Gary lent me, these literally fell in my lap. From 1962, the first year Burt Monro, "The World's Fastest Indian" went to Bonneville. I can only assume there was a buzz among the racers about the old guy, and Jim or another family member took these shots in a Wendover parking lot. I think it's Phyllis Lindsley admiring the bike in the first shot.

The ex-SoCal coupe that Alex Xydias ran. After his brother-in-law died from burns driving this coupe, Alex sold it and it went through several owners. This is when John Moxley owned it. (I mistakenly stated that Dawson Hadley ran the car, thanks Lurker Mick -- you were right

This might be Boyd Penington's roadster, it was identified as the Kolb-Voigt roadster, they were very close, but the Kolb roadster had filled wheel wells, this one does not Kolb voight WAYNE KOEPPE Collection.jpg

This one looks like El Mirage to me unless it’s written Bonneville on the back. Dirt and salt show different on the tires and shoes. Background hills too.

All Oregon Boys, as I remember Justin and Ernie were related, and Glenn ran Salem Speed Shop. Ernie went drag racing, with Gas Dragsters, and switched to T/F in '73. Very competitive in the Northwest, raced until he passed in 1989.

Three names here that are familiar, Boyd Pennington ran a pretty cool fuel altered at the drags in the mid ‘60’s, Fritz Voight went on to great things with Mickey Thompson and then there is Kolb. Was that Leland Kolb who ran top fuel cars into the 1970’s, maybe even later?

You're absolutely right, @jimmy six . I've colorized that background many times for my @colorvintiques projects. Info I have shows it ran at least Riverside 1/2 mile, Colton dragstrip and El Mirage, along with Bonneville in those years.

@39ChevyBob...Jim was the first to crack 200 in a Roadster...how cool is that eh!...was that particular Lightening Bolt one of these pictured...I sometimes miss some of the finer details...I apologize if I missed that...

Second no question it was a Speed Milestone but was it an actual record as I understand to be a record it must be matched and that in itself ups the steel gonad factor Bigtime as just one time would be a record in my book...

Update...I found my answer 1954 averaged and done deal...too cool...link below to anybody who is curious as I was...;)

Those I suspect are the tires on that Roadster that experience the speeds achieved at the Dry Lakes...My question are they Racing tires for Indy or Repurposed Aviation or lastly tires specially made for Dry Lakes Racing?

I am surprised that they had those ugly stickers on plates even then...ugg...they wouldn't allow obscuring (nerf bumper) of the plates these days either...all those questions and comments aside that's one nice ass end...;)

Back in full color this morning. By the early 60's Jim Lindsley had slowed down on driving, but stayed active in the Gear Grinders, SCTA and Bonneville fulfilling many duties. Son Larry started stepping into the driver's slot, here with his #16 B gas 1950 Ford F-I. From a parking lot at Bonneville in 1963....
