I have a set of 15 inch steel powder coated wheels for the roadster if I decide the 34 wire wheels aren't doing it and a set of 17 or 18 inch wire wheels with tires that hold air. They are in decent shape. I can't remember the size exactly as I haven't seen them in a while and they are in the storage unit. Have no earthly use for them but I had a 265 Chevy motor a guy wanted and traded him for the engine.

Several sets of "real" (magnesium) Halibrand, a couple of sets of American (magnesium) and one, "one -off" set (4) of magnesium wheels designed and cast by Dick Harrell (70's drag racer).
    spread between two garages.

I don’t have as many as some of you here. Probably because I am pretty happy with the wheels and tires that are on my cars( mostly chrome wheels with whitewalls)

Not seen 3 tail light per side in a while, and the plugs (exhaust caps) done early 60s time frame.

The number of wheels I have does not bother me as much as the brand new tires on several of my project cars that where put on the back burners for one reason or another and are sitting in the storage building surrounded by shelves of new in the box parts for then and some other projects and they are approaching 20 plus years in age! Where does the time go! Oh yeah the 285/ 70 /15 bfg's on my 55 cost 75 bucks each back then ,now they are 200 plus from Coker! They have always been stored up on jack stands off the concrete , but still. Larry

  10. Nothing as clean and hot rod as the other posts. But I do have WAAAAAAY too many 16" Ford wires and steels (4"-5" width), some 17" and 18" Ford wires, some 16" 1937 Olds steels, a set of 4 lug multi steels, started collecting 6 lug clip Chevy steel wheels and 2 sets of 4 lug temp spares (both Hillmans). I had to buy 2 or 4 sets of 16" Ford wires when I only wanted one of them, when the time comes I'll choose a good set for me and release the others back into the wild. I have a plastic shed garden growing in the back yard :).

Can anyone compete with Moriarity? Not me, that's for sure. But, I have a full set of Cragar S/S and appropriately sized tires on the Delivery, another full set of big -N-little Cragar S/S wheels and tires in the shop, a set of big-N-little rally wheels and tires, several American (McCreary) tires on rims, several other full sets of tires alone, and then a pair of W-I-D-E tires like Moriarity's "Chicken Scratrch" tires. I'm sure there's more I've forgotten about. And a few "spare" rims/tires outside behind the garage. Do brand new trailer tires count? If so, then five of those. I am Butch/5r6sedandelivery.

  20. I found this and started reading. Then I had to go count. A set of steelies on the 55 custoneline and a set of rod masters, a set of reverse chrome, and a set of mopar steelies because they fit, and the 70's tbird turbine wheels that were rollers when I was building it. A pair of 15x6, pair of 15x7, pair of 15x8, pair of 14x7 chevy rallies. A set of 15x12 and 15x4 rodlites that are on the A sedan I'm building. A set of magnesium slots from dads 69 Corvette. A set of 15x10 5.5 pattern M/T slots. 4 15x7 5on5 chevy steelies. An ugly set of 90's chevy truck aluminum for rollers. Some cool old castalloy wheels from Australia on the trailer. Steelies with dog dishes for the trailer. A set af halibrand wheels because I picked them up cheap. A seat of model A wires, a set of model T wood spokes. A couple of sets of off topic stuff for the daily driver pickups. Bad thing is I still dont have what I want for the Model A. Oh and some centerline, progressive 5 spokes, some 454 SS chrome pickup wheels, and some pickup rallies with astro van caps and tri rib rings in the attic front my square body pickup days. So I found out two things. In a hoarder and I have rings for my steelies on my 55. Good thing we didnt count intakes, or steering wheels.

    Hello,

The times that our dad drove his Buick sedan into the real two car garage next to my brother’s 51 Olds Sedan with some new tires, it made the garage smell like “new rubber”, which it was. When my brother got a new tire or two at the same time, the smell was almost overwhelming. It made everything smell like a tire shop or a mechanics garage with racks of tires overhead. (like in the old days) of course we left the side door open and the large two car door up, until night time, that helped. But it still had that tire smell for days and weeks.
upload_2020-3-31_4-12-29.png 1951 Oldsmobile Sedan in the two car garage during 1956

For a time, we had several spare tires in the garage and when we built the rear backyard garage, there were several more tires stacked in the corner. Even if we covered the stacked tires, the smell of rubber was always in the air. When we went to a tire shops for balancing and alignment, the smell was so much stronger. But, it did smell like our single work space backyard garage. Maybe at the peak of drag racing both the Impala and the 1940 Willys Coupe, we had two sets of slicks, and two spare tires. (6 overall not being used) Then, when we rolled in the 40 Willys Coupe, it sat on stock rims and towing tires. (so 6 + 4 +10 tires in that backyard garage.)
upload_2020-3-31_4-13-44.png Reconstructed rear backyard Rumpus Room to a functional hot rod shop with a plywood garage door.

My brother and I never did like the smell of the fresh rubber from new tires or ones stored away in an enclosed garage. The newly constructed backyard garage was large enough to store one hot rod moved in a parallel parking spot. The garage door was sideways and did not have a direct drive in angle. In there were a couple of spare 14” and 15” blackwall and whitewall spare tires in the corner space.

In 1958, we actually got some new “Bruce Slicks” for the Impala. They were 14 inch and 7.75 wide, so they fit perfectly in the rear wheel well of the Impala. We knew they were not allowed in the stock class, but the Lions Dragstrip allowed "anything goes" during the timed runs prior to the elimination rounds or challenge races . All eliminations were back to the stock factory tires. But, boy did those new Bruce Slicks have a smell that lasts forever!
upload_2020-3-31_4-14-49.png upload_2020-3-31_4-15-9.png Bruce Slicks on timed runs 1958-60. The 7.75 Bruce Slicks easily fit under Impala rear tire openings and look outstanding during our street cruises and races. They were awful in the mist or foggy weather, though.

The popular cheater slicks were allowed in the stock class and our set of Moxley Cheater Slicks were part of the experimental phase for the 58 Impala. The cheater slicks were allowed for a while, until some people complained that they were not stock items from the factory. So, those had to be replaced with stock tires during all elimination rounds.

    upload_2020-3-31_4-18-10.png THANKS @elgringo71 upload_2020-3-31_4-18-44.png 8:00 X 7.75 X 14

In late 1959, we started our 1940 Willys build and had a 56 Chevy rear axle set up to make changing tires from the Impala to the Willys, easy and simple. The Bruce Slicks fit under the fender opening and gave the Willys plenty of traction. They stayed on the Willys for racing only and the towing tires and rims replaced the slicks for the trip to and from the dragstrip. Room was at a minimum, so one Bruce Slick was in the trunk of the Willys and the other in the trunk of the 58 Impala during the towing trips.

When we raced only the 58 Impala earlier, the Bruce Slicks were again split up, one in the trunk and one on the clear plastic seat covers inside of the Impala rear seat.

    upload_2020-3-31_4-20-40.png
Bill Moxley used to always park next to us in the Lions Dragstrip Pits area. His black Cadillac El Dorado Brougham was an impressive car. He sold quite a few cheater slicks until they were banned in the stock car classes as non factory items. When the Bruce Slicks and then the development of M&H slicks came to drag racing, that put the brakes on the cheater slick business. The M&H slicks took over almost every class that allowed slicks in the eliminations.

In late July, we had a set of huge M&H slicks on order for our Willys Coupe. My brother had planned on those larger M&H slicks since he had our local machine shop make some 9 inch wide, 15" steel Chevy rims just for that purpose. I can't imagine how much more the rear backyard garage would have smelled of rubber when we got those huge M&H slicks... but we will never know.

    Hello,

After being in the Impala in the early hours of Saturday mornings with one Bruce Slick in the back seat emanating that fresh cut rubber smell, it got to me then and would, even now. On those cold mornings, we had to drive several miles with the windows up in the Impala. The odor of the tire was overpowering. But, I did not want look like a silly kid and kept the windows up. Even when my brother turned on the heater in the Impala, I was able to withstand the rubber smell. As the Bruce slicks got older and used, it was still powerful, but a little bit better.

    Jnaki

How does one who disliked the rubber smell, stand that smell when there was a need for a rubber wetsuit in surfing? 45 degrees at Rincon in Santa Barbara was not an all day, in the water session. It was a good two hour session, back in the car for coffee, toast, maybe some hot chili, wrap up like a mummy and take a warm nap. Then an hour or so later, back in the cold water for a couple of more hours of pristine waves. The locals thought I was crazy, but the rubber tire smell did odd things to a kid.

That is why I never bought one of the first thick beaver tail, rubber wetsuits. It smelled like an M&H racing slick. As the technology got better for the wetsuit materials, the smell was slight, but still there. By then, it was the reward that was greater than the odor. Plus, who wants to freeze, you know what, in those cold early morning sessions.

For all of the times wearing modern wetsuits, it always reminded me of being trapped inside of the Impala on those early Saturday mornings with a Bruce Slick in the back seat. And, working in the backyard garage with that stack of tires, nearby.
