The other day I was watching Counting Cars and they were looking at a 1976 Monte Carlo. The lead guy said that they had a 305. I at first thought that this was nonsense, because I used to have a 76 Monte and I was sure it had a 350. Then I looked up SBC's and found that 305s started in 1976. My whole world was turned upside down. I loved that car, sold it too soon, and now you tell me it had a 305 in it. So, anyway, my question is, was there ever a time when Chevy was using both 305s and 350s?

Not HAMB worthy. But yes it was out then for those that "wanted" (selling point for the times) a smaller V8. Don't forget, these programs like to throw in "fun fact's" that don't always apply. But you did learn 305's are older than you thought. Just leave it at that.

1976-2001 I think are the years they used both engines in various vehicles.

.... and here I was thinking that they came out in '75.... Oh, well....
The only good thing about those was the crank, rods and 4-bbl heads with the 57-58cc Chambers....
And a few other odds an' ends..

those of us that run a cubic inch limited class prefer the 76 to 85 [?] 305 that still had the two piece rear seal-seems many have issues with the one piece rear seal staying in?

Just put it behind you.....don't fret about it and maybe quit watching those overly-dramatic, holy-cow-we-have-a-deadline-we'll-never-be-able-to-meet, this-problem-that-developed-is-likely-to-cause-world-collapse, TV shows. You'll accomplish more out in the shop than you will in front of the TV. When you need info come to "The Source" for reliable info.....the HAMB! :D

you're probably right. I forget, and didn't bother to look it up, since really, who gives a flying F when the 305 came out.

Had they but in a large journal 3" crank in a 350 block instead? Well, it never happened in the mid 70's. :(

  12. another thing alot of people dont know is that Chevy built an even smaller V8 at the same time as the 305. The 262! Buddy has one in a 32 glass car.

Actually, the one good thing about a 305 is that a 327 will bolt in its place!

Yeah, but Johnny Gee says it's not HAMB worthy so I won't ask any more questions.

Is that the blue hi boy coupe that Gary Trenner built?

  20. Don't know who built it, but its a highboy 5 window that is blue and came our of Washington. The car is now located in Damascus Oregon. Guy who runs PDX car culture owns it currently.

A 267 block and a 3 inch crank you can have a 230 inch SBC.

That sounds interesting. Probably quite a combination of parts would be needed to make it all work together though. A 230 inch SBC would pair nicely with the 215 aluminum Olds V-8 I have in my T roadster. ;)

Don't fret Deere boy, just keep on keepin' on!

Yep, had one of those dogs in an 82 el camino. A 305 would have been a huge upgrade! small displacement, low compression, smog controls that were still in their infancy. All added up to s l o w.

Yup, same car. That engine was a low miler out of a Monza that Gary bought from my late race partner Bruce Geisler.

I'll bet the 305 in the '78 F-body I had would fail in comparison to yours...lol

It did run well, just not 1/2 strong.

The 305's did quite well in the pure stock dirt track cars I used to run at. they put a 320 inch rule for a few years.

Johnny may be right but everyone forgets where they are and steps in the doo doo around here once in a while. Don't give it a second thought. And that was a 350 in your Monte Carlo, I remember it well. lol
