Thank you both! Looked like one I saw on Line but could not find that casting number.

Just to make sure you're aware, it's a factory part, and not really an "
adapter". If anything, it's a starter motor adapter; both the 6 and V-8 use them, but both cast iron Powerglide main cases are different also, that the starter motor adapter is bolted to. This starter motor adapter plate WAS used by a lot of aftermarket vendors for engine/transmission swaps; say to use a 283 Chevrolet engine and bolt it to a 40 Ford transmission. The Ford would then use an aluminum adapter that bolted to this starter motor adapter plate. Some of the prices being asked for on E-Bay for these starter motor adapter plates is ridiculous. Same basic design used from 55-62 (but only with the 283 V-8 engine; the 327's got the "new" aluminum Powerglide. The Turboglide did not use a starter motor adapter plate at all, they got the block mounted starter motors). I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Not a lot of value except to someone restoring a 56 V8 powerglide car that broke theirs.

    Thank you Butch.
It was odd that I got it with a 40 Ford I bought.
I have always been a 3 pedle guy and thought at first glance it was an adapter for an early something trans.
    Thanks again.

    All good. Wall art.

  9. I wouldn't say it is not of value in other cases; my kid has used several of them along with the old; but pretty common aftermarket adapters to hook Chevy motors to early Ford transmissions.

  10. We always referred to them as Mid Plates. There actually is an adapter that bolts to that piece then to the early Ford as well as second gen Ford 4 bolt trans.

Well I learned something today. I was more on the line of thinking that they weren't one of those rare made out of unobtainium pieces that Ebay bids skyrocket on because guys have been hunting them. More in the 20/50 range depending on how bad a guy wants one.

I used two of them for two different kits I sold, that allow you to bolt SBC/Later inline 4 or 6 cylinder (153, 194, 215, 230, 250, 292) up against the stock 3 speed trans in a 49-54 car. You could even use it with a BBC, but it would have to be a display only setup; a BBC would scatter the stock trans in an instant. They were used with an aluminum adapter; as I said earlier, they are a starter motor adapter ring originally used with a cast iron V-8 Powerglide, but now used with a manual trans.

  14. I pitched more than a few of those along with the iron glides; but I did save the last couple I have come across and passed them on for reuse.

  15. What piston/broke said.......you use that along with an adapter to the hogs head - still don't scarp it....

Man those early powerglides were heavy. My brother would blow up one a week in his 57 chevy. Here he came down the road in reverse from town. LOL. :D Lippy

I use the one I saved for standing engines on the flywheel end. They space the engine up just enough to clear the crank.

  19. Well, if the two I have don't sell at the next swap meet, maybe they can become part of an engine stand.
