March 10th 2020 Elongated the master cylinder mounting holes in the cage 3/32" each to fit the mounting holes on the replacement master cylinder. Both holes were elongated to keep the geometry intact.

That was the plan but I couldn't find my die grinder burrs. I thought I could detect the soft laughter of my Dad's spirit on my shoulder. I can't put paid to this task just yet. Beer of the day was River Horse Brewing Co's Oatmeal Milk Stout.

  2. Cleaned up the carbs and blower I took off the 41 so I can bag and box them for future use maybe on one of the other projects. One day the weather will break around here and I can get more motivated, at least the rain is washing the salt away. 20200309_140156.jpg

Ground off the rivets and replaced the bent & rusty mounting bolts on a set of Guide 903 headlights, used repro Model A headlight bolts along with rounded stainless screws also sold for Model A’s. Had to file the slots slightly wider. The original bolts look to be regular carriage bolts, the replacements are curved to work with the inside of the mount.[IMG][IMG]

March 11th 2020 I didn't have suitable materials for "scaffolding" to reach the top of the truck for the paint and bodywork operations. I cheated and used some particleboard shelving I had layin' around. I was punished for that foolishness before long. Standing on the shelf I had placed over the frame rails in front of the firewall but, with my feet too far from the frame rails, the particleboard broke and I went down. The engine oil drain pan was beneath me but I landed just right and it didn't become a carnival midway dunk tank episode. I didn't get hurt and I think the Great Mechanic of the universe gave me a mulligan.

Thanx, I'm using a running board now, unwieldy and heavy but it's not going to collapse under me.

might save you having to buy new shoes. Even the smaller and cheaper one from HF would help.

March 12th 2020 Starting the die grinder burr hunt. I will clean and inventory as I go along in the search. Started with my Dad's machinist tool box. Moved everything and vacuumed the same re-roofing debris that was on the truck.

There was a coping saw, small vise and two dead multi-meters outside the box. The top compartment held computer diagnostic boards and LAN tools from the nineties, technology long gone. In the drawers were a jewelers screwdriver set, razor blade scraper, tweezers, key fobs and trinkets, novelty playin' cards, decals and dash plaques, set of micrometers, set of small hole gauges, set of small taps and dies and crimpers.

In the thrift store chest below were a blind hole bearing puller set, master torx kit, stud extractor set, impact tool kit, screw extractor kit, brake tube flaring tool, vernier calipers, hole gauges, spring scale, disk brake caliper tool set, dial indicator, piston ring installer, letter and number punch set, the dreaded ridge reamer, piston ring compressor, dial bore gauge, valve spring compressor, harmonic balancer installer and puller set and Dad's ring groove cleaner.

But no die grinder burrs or bits.

I removed all of the interior window mouldings, door, windshield, etc., form my '50 Chevy 4dr, and wet sanded them in the bath tub to prep them for paint. Man that bath tub comes in handy for car and motorcycle parts! I wonder what else it could be used for? It's nice to have a parts wash station in the house!

I got the rings off a set of pistons and have them soaking in Berrymans, exciting, right?

What did I do today? Well, let's see....got up this morning and drove my Galaxie to work. ( first time since October!!) After work I went to get my newly purchased parts car. I was excited! Four hours, two winches, and two batteries later it was loaded up and headed home. The thing was literally grown into the ground (the rearend hogshead was against the dirt). Lately I feel more like an archeologist than a car guy. I also had to cut down a handful of trees....man am I tired. 20200312_175330.jpg

Helped my 9 year old rebuild a Briggs and Stratton 5 horse carburetor. We got it to pop on starting fluid but I didn’t have any gas in the spare can... he was still excited though!

That's precious. (See "origin of precious") IMG_20200312_161009.jpg IMG_20200312_165431.jpg
My first rebuild was a Briggs and Stratton in a 9th grade Power Mechanics shop class. Sold it to a lawn mower/bicycle shop. (Later got my very first job there)
    PS: You're a good pop.

March 13th 2020 Second pass over the cab exterior, this time with Scotchbrite "cookies" in the air-powered angle grinder to get the nooks and crannies the Eastwood drum can't reach and eighty years of character bumps and dents I'm going to treat with filler before painting. Also took the more aggressive Eastwood 40 grit drum over the cowl bottoms where rust was bubbling thru.

After getting all the bumps and dents I could see. I gave the cab exterior a Dawn dish soap and water wash down to see what I missed. Beer of the day was Fordham & Dominion Brewing Company's Back Stage IPA.
