Projects My Stewart Warner Holy Grail

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Roadster1929, Mar 8, 2020.

  1. Been collecting back mounted SW’s for about 15 years, finally I got all the ones that I wanted for my Roadster.
The last piece of my puzzle is my 32 Auburn speedo, and matching tach. I got those restored by Bob’s Speedometer in Howell MI- highly recommend him, he did an excellent job with very quick turn around. The other gauges did not require any restoration. I liked the patina on them, as it matches the rest of the car.
I am so happy to finally get these installed in my car..........

Looks wonderful! I usually don’t like “ hand crafted “ dashes! But this one I do! Looks great!

  5. Looks good, like using vintage pieces rebuilt. My friend has a 29 Essex, and he's like to re-use the original gauges. The fuel gauge is made by Stewart Warner as well. Any idea what sending unit to use? Do you think it would be a the same as the ones sold for the universal fuel gauge?

Love the look of gauges mounted from the back. I also like the look of little hooded lights for illumination.
    Your dash looks great.

You could have ordered gauges out of a catalog, but some things are worth the extra effort.

    Nice work, -Abone.

  13. The way a dash should be; gauges all the way across the board.

very nice, those who know the time and trouble to piece together a set of gauges like yours are happy when someone completes the project.

  15. Not to detract from the very great looking dash, but is that a tool tag key chain.

You have put together an exceptional dash. Those of us that collect vintage Stewart Warner gauges can appreciate the time, patience, luck, and small fortune it takes to complete a project such as yours. Great job, its outstanding.

The hardest part of the whole ordeal was probably on the back of the panel, where the studs to mount the rear mount gauges had to be erected. Not only do they have to be in the exact right place for the particular gauges, but they have to be perpendicular. That's 16 studs. Very, very nice!

  22. Thanks for all the great comments on my dash, it was a lot of work but well worth it.
Here is an up close picture of the tool tag/ key chain. Don’t really remember where it came from, I’m sure if it could talk it would have some stories to tell! 48ED600D-C2DA-49BB-9F7E-2555F2FDC9D5.jpeg

  26. YES! Love the 5” Stewart Warner’s.

I’m slowly working my way through a Speedo, tach and 4 in 1. Doing the mechanical bits and designing faces for the speedo and tach. The hardest thing to find is crescent needles.
